Having much time to tweak with the general settings of the game I have found a few quick tips, drivers, and other things that will improve the quality of Source for the time being. We have to face the fact that although this is a very beautiful game that has improved vastly on what CS once was it is still a bit buggy. After all it is now the first version of CS Source. It has nothing left but to improve upon itself. So in the mean time there are things out there to take advantage or manipulate the weakness of the bugs in this 1st version.
1. I havent found a significant difference in running certain settings in the advance portion of the video settings. Running everything high with VS, AF, and AA off seems to work wonders with keeping all the action, physics, and Source game apperance in tact. Running 2X AA and 4X AF gives you a drop of about 8-10 fps.
2. If you do not have a DX 9 card that will allow you to run the super aspects of the game more than likely it automatically puts you into DX8 modes or if you have real low cards it puts you in DX7. The key to changing these modes is a command for the console: mat_dxlevel 70, 80 or 90 depending on which version of DX you want to run. For non DX 9 cards I do not recommend you running higher than DX 8. You will get a little more polish with a massive drop in frame rate. (from 100fps, down to 20 or 30 fps). DX 7 lets your run at a constant 130-140 FPS but it takes alot of the shine out of the game. If your running a DX 9 card like the brand new Nvidia 6 series or the New ATI's you dont have to worry about your DX settings.
3. The max frame rate for this game is pre-set at 300. Previous installments of CS would only allow you to run a max refresh rate of 99-100. Everyone knows the good old console commands for changeing frame rate (fps_max #), checking frame rate (net_graph 1), or changing your rate (rate 9999).
4. The CS.net website has a decent tutorial for making spray logo's for Source. http://www.forumplanet.com/counterstrike/topic.asp?fid=8447&tid=1468543
5. No current word yet on the release of more maps or player models but its expected that they will be released in a big patch when HL2 is released in Nov.
6. People that are lazy and dont want to spend the time cycling through massive buy menus because the old ones no longer exist. You can find a good buy script on Nextwish.org that will work for CS 1.6, CZ, and CS Source. Its a quick download with a 1 click execute. It does all the work for you. It sets alias bingds, weapon binds, quick selects, and radio binds. http://nextwish.org/mods.php?page=script/cstrike
7. I have tried many driver updates since the release of Source. Prob about 5 different drivers to find one that I like that runs Source good as well as keeping the integrity of my previous games. For example I installed the new Nvidia 61.77 drivers and my Source looks great and runs high FPS BUT my previous CS games are now locked at a constant 60 fps. If I was running a pure 100 before the update I should be able to now. I found a new set of drivers released for Alienware for the FX series cards or earlier that work out fantastic. It allows me to run all my previous games stable along with running Source stable. The driver version for Nvidia users is 66.81. I highly recommend that driver for your Nvidia card for the time being.
That is all for the moment. Replies or other information about Source that you find to help out your graphics, fps, or tweaking would be much appreciated to compile to what has already been said.
