No batten down the hatches on this one.

Katrina is truly the deathball. Category 5 and still growing. I pray for whoever gets this one to stay alive. I thought Ivan was terrible. Katrina is a fucking demon.

MiddleFinger

No one...it's a mandatory evac. No one, unless they're hiding will be in N.O.
New Orleans is actually LOWER than sea level...anyone that stays will be drowned, if not blown away first. As far as evacuating, they started yesterday, and if it gets real bad, they'll open the opposite lanes for travel in the fleeing direction, not allowing anyone to drive towards the city.

They're saying it's going to be at least 6 months before anyone can get back into parts of N.O.

A little info on the city:

The majority if New Orleans is below sea level.
They have pumps that run 24-7 to prevent backups in sewage
Due to the fact that it is below sea level, the majority of grave sites are above ground. Coffins are air tight while bodies decompoose and form gasses which will cause the caskets to float.
The majority of the south east relies on New Orleans' port to supply fuel for our vehicles among other necessities.
There are numerous haz-mat sites along the southern most portions of the Mississippi River which empties into the Gulf of Mexico on the MS/LA border.
There are numorous Oil Rigs off the coast of LA, MS, and AL.

All of these spell disaster and disease. Even if the areas that aren't hit directly aren't screwed up, this area is going to be in trouble none-the-less. There's so many rednecks around here that people are going to be shot just for gas. It's going to be like the gas shortages of the 70's all over again. Shit, we haven't fully recovered from the shortages due to Dennis...It's not going to be pretty.

Still not too bad right now. 6:15am and I still have power so thats a huge plus. The sun is just starting to rise at the moment. Couldnt get much sleep tonite due to the wind howling across my fireplace. I still have memories of Ivan and the noises the fireplace made, so its been keeping me up. Drifting in and out of sleep for the past 6 hrs.

People are deffinately fucking crazy in P-cola though. I have periodically jumped in and out of my apt. front door to see the trees move and cars have been driving down the roads all day long. Its just wierd seeing something so huge and catastrophic to the west of you and watchin people just drive down the road.

My mom's side of the family all live outside of biloxi (MS), Escatapwa to be exact.. my mom hasnt heard from my grandma yet.. last word was she swam out of her window, she has some cuts and bruises and is staying alone at my great aunts house.. she refuses to leave cause she knows my mom is coming.... my mom's entire home town is leveled.. and we don't know what happened to some of the other elders in our family that refused to leave.... im sure my grandmother is in quiet a state right now.. she was with her 80ish yearold boyfriend that anytime anyone calls to give an update refuses to answer on his state.. parents are leaving tommorrow to head down and hopefully find my grandmother, alive. what a beast of a storm.

I hope that any of you that participate in this debauchery of a forum made it through okay. What a bitch.

Damn. Sorry to hear about your family being even remotely involved in that storm. I know how bad it was for me and my family during Ivan and it was only a Cat3. That storm changed my entire thinking around hurricanes.

The one that hit LA/MS is in the top 4 storms to hit the US on record, one of the costliest, most damaging, and most effective to the entire US.

I heard on a radio commentary that Katrina to the US was our Tsunami. It was some unbelievable shit. Especially when houses that survived Camille were destroyed by this storm. When you think of the worst hurricanes EVER you always think of Camille and Andrew right off the bat. This fucker surpassed both of them. Thats some pretty scary shit.

Too be honest with you I was fucking scared shitless just knowing that thing was right fucking next to me.

My girlfriend and I still havent heard from her mother either. She is stationed out of Picayune MS. Its right on the LA/MS state line and right above the Pearl river.

God bless the survivors and God rest there souls to the ones who didnt make it. Its a horrible thing. It should never happen to anyone.

They're now saying "This is the worst natural disaster to ever hit the U.S." As New Orleans is still taking on water. The breach in the levy has grown to 400 feet wide. Every effort to get control over the flood waters has been useless. What they're doing is dropping 3000 pound sand bags into the water via hellicopter. However, the water is 200 feet deep at the breach and these sand bags are just consumed by the depth. I can only assume that they are simply tearing apart from the rushing waters and the sand being distributed accross the bottom.

Looters are shooting at police. Looting! HA! You see these stupid motherfuckers leaving stores with things like shoes! I can understand necesities, but fucking SHOES?!?! And Liquor?!?! What the fuck are these idiots thinking? Go right ahead, get wasted...get dehydrated, and cleans the earth of your ignorance!!! While you're at it, make sure you wear your nice brand new $150-$200 Nikes in the waste deep water. I'm suer all the rest of the dumb-asses will appreciate you looking your best as your rotting corpse floats by.

IMO: New Orleans is lost. Give it up and let it be consumed by the earth. It was a stupid place to build a city anyway. What the hell were they thinking in the first place? "Hey, lets build a city below sea level. We can run pumps all day and night and build walls to keep out the water...we can then build the nations most important sea ports there..."
If they do ever get the flooding under control, they're going to have to contend with all the decimation that's been a result of. There's many, many chemical plants right there where all this is happening. There's going to be so many dead bodies rotting, creating disease. Spoiled food, desintigrating animals, disease, chemical illness, death...is it really worth it?

I by no means am trying to degrade the poor souls that have lost their lives, living or dead. I'm just taking in account the facts of the matter.

It's defiantly a shit pile down there now. And why would you loot at a time like this? Steal some tvs and shit so I can stare at the blank screen since there is no power. They would be better off stealing a boat since the most of it is under water.

Nebula

Sammie
08-31-2005, 09:42 AM
I can see looting for food and water but stealing TV’s and shoes is just plain stupid.

I also think comparing this to the tsunami is way over the top. Yes, there is mass devastation but it in no way compares to the tsunami. That’s just the media beating its melodrama dick. The tsunami killed around 200 thousand people and it struck multiple countries without any warning at all.

I do I hope everyone's family is ok. There is going to be a long process of clean up.

Why do people continue to build on the beaches like this? They know it’s only a matter of time until nature does it thing. Besides, all the building causes coastal erosion which only adds to the problem. If 90% of the marsh lands had not been destroyed from over building and general human havoc then the situation wouldn’t be as bad. Wetlands act as a natural barrier.

MiddleFinger
08-31-2005, 10:56 AM
I don't necissarily think they are compairing this with the tsunami as far as human casualties, but property damage. The tsunami hit without warning, whereas with a hurricane you have days to prepare. Had there not been any warning, I can imagine that there would be many more deaths than the tsunami. The population of New Orleans alone is 484674. That doesn't include the outlying ares, Baton Rouge, and Biloxy (which got hit hardest).

As far as building on the coastlines...the only thing I can liken that to is: Do you think if the early settlers would have gone to Cali in search of gold if they new it had the potiential to break off into the ocean? It's all about greed...no matter how far back, no matter what the circumstance...it's built into the humman persona.

Sammie
08-31-2005, 03:28 PM
it's built into the humman persona.

agreed but its also encouraged and perpetuated through our economic system. We dont have to take it to the extreme, but that's hard not to do when you create institutions that necessitate that extreme to ensure its very survival.

Why do the people who have it best often insist on being the 1st to criticize the system that allows them the ability and privilege to live as they do and still bitch.

If we were to institute all of the economic, social, and environmental programs that the touchy feely left leaning sectors of our society insist we "have" to, then our country would become economically untenable. Half of the gas problem right now is that environmental legislation makes it prohibitive and profitless to build refinery capacity, makes it impossible to drill for oil in places we know theirs huge reserves of oil so as not to spill some on a endangered salamander. That nutjob Cindy Shehan today stated that Katrina is (can you guess) President Bush's fault directly because of his environmental policies. For anyone who wondered why he wouldn't give that intellectual retard a second audience, there you have your answer. She doesn't want to discuss her son's death with him, she want the opportunity to say that behind closed doors he kicked her in the puss and gave her a titty twister. She's a fucking tool of the socialists.

People who build on the beach do so for one reason. The beach is a really cool place to live, and if you have the money to buy the property, and you want to live there, then by all means build a house there. That being said, the deed to your property should state that #1 insurance won't be available, #2 Uncle Sam ain't gonna pay you to rebuild your shit. But,,,,,,,,,,,where do you draw the line at? There are house's 5 miles inland from the nearest beach that are a pile of match sticks too, how do you decide what to zone "we ain't payin' you back" and "we will pay you back"? In the case of Florida, the entire state in vunirable to being flattened by a storm, depending what trajectory the storm takes. Do we flat out state that if you live in Fla. then tuff shit if your house gets leveled?

It's really easy to sit back and Monday morning quarterback every move the government makes, but unless you run for office and do a better job, most of your criticisms are nothing more than rehashed political detritus.

I CALL BULLSHIT!! :D

I'm in the middle of demolishing a bathroom so I'll have to come back to this to elaborate but in short............no system is perfect and criticism can often lead to improvement and therefore should never be discouraged.

Always view the world through a skeptical eye but never loose sight of hope.
