View Full Version : University Peer-to-peer (P2P) blockage

I have a question for all of you techies. Ok, so I attend Georgia State University in Atlanta. Also, I live here in the University housing which has internet/tv service provided by purdigital.net.

I've been trying to download CDs over bittorent clients such as Azureus. Also, I've tried downloading single tracks from LimeWire but, no luck. LimeWire finds search results but when I try to download them, it can't connect and then says "Need more sources" even when there are 100+ peers.

Azureus gives me a notification saying "Port 6881 has been reserved, bla bla bla." It seems that the University has blocked this port because most or all file-sharing programs use this port.

My roommate has a laptop with built-in wireless and he says that he can just walk around campus with LimeWire open and downloading. So how is he able to connect to LimeWire on wireless, but I can't on ethernet.

Does anyone know a way around this block/restriction? When I was at home during the summer, I was downloading around 10 CDs per week and occasionally some movies and programs. I've tried using an HTTP proxy from Mexico that I use sometimes when I get banz0red from forums, but again, no luck with that either.

Here is the email that Pur Digital sent to me:
Dear PurDigital Subscriber,

In recent days we have received numerous complaints from the Business
Software Alliance, Media Sentry, and others related to the illegal
distribution of copyrighted material thru various peer-to-peer
programs which include Gnutella, KazAa and BitTorrent.

To control this abuse situation, we will be implementing stringent
controls over peer-to-peer services on our network at the GSU Village
and GSU Lofts in coming days. These changes will not affect your
ability to send or receive email or your ability to surf the Internet.

We thank you in advance for your understanding and remind you that it
is illegal to download or share copyright-protected material without
appropriate licensing rights.

Sincerely,

Lynn Hall

Some torrent programs alow you to switch which port you use. You just need to pick an open port.

I've tried switching to port 7000, 12000, and 15000. Since I don't have access to the network config, I can't see which ports are open

I'm not sure. I'm right across the street practically in Georgia Tech's dormitories but everything is fine here. The RIAA sued about 70 students here using I2Hub in the Spring and that has me really anxious to download anything. Right now I'm just trading mixed martial arts fights and instructionals. I figure I'm safe getting/giving those but with everything else there's no telling.

I would either A) look into a newsgroup subsription or B) go buy a wireless card.

What's your major there?

Wow, that's cool man! You're like a block or two away hahaha. I'm majoring in Computer Information Systems. What about you?

Yea, my friend high-school friend over at GT told me about those students getting in big trouble.

So by "everything is fine here" you mean that you can download freely? I downloaded Azureus on my friend's computer at GT and it was downloading, but it was pretty slow.

There is no wireless signal at the University Village (housing) but the academic campus is completely covered.

I'm having no problems getting mma related files from bit torrent and my brother uses a newsgroup with no problems so far, but I'm staying away from the known P2P programs like I2Hub and Kazaa. I'm sure it's only a matter of time though before they start blocking ports like your school has. Hopefully someone computer savvy like Neb or AR will see this thread and give you some tips.

My major was Aerospace Engineering but I think I'm too dumb for that so I switched to Building Construction in the Architecture department, hehe. Right now I'm trying desperately to get my GPA back up for HOPE. If I make ALL A's this semester and ALL A's next semester then I can get it. :frown:
