I'm building a new comp, just was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions.
Feel free to bash my ignorant decisions, I don't know a ton about this.
So far was thinking of this....Roughly.
Amd 64 3500+
Asus A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 Nvidia Nforce SlI AtX
Geforce 6800GT
I gig Mushkin Twin Pack (2x 512)
Maybe a Seagate 250 gig HD
I'm open to any suggestions.
Thanks!

Were I to build one right now it would look like this
Athlon 64 3000+
MSI K8N Neo4F
1GB Kingston PC3200
ATI Radeon X850XTPE
2 Hitachi deskstar 80 GB in Raid 0
As far as the case goes, my freaky side directs me here

it has nothing to do with wich company is better. The 7800gtx IS the best card out right now

Let me simplify this for you genius, I would run an integrated Intel graphics chipset before putting a Nvidia card in my computer. Can you understand that, or do I need to translate it to retardeze? He was asking what other people would suggest, not what hippie insists he buy.
"edit" nice hippie deleteing your 1st post, way to skew the thread. For those who didn't see it, there was a post between my first two posts.

I saw that case earlier, it's pretty sweet, expensive though.

I've got a config pretty similar to the one you are looking at
AMD 3500+ Winchester
1GB Mushkin (low latency)
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
74GB SATA Raptor
250GB SATA
Plextor DVD SATA burner
BFG 6800GT OC
PC Power & Cooling 500W
This machine has been rock solid since day one. I'm very happy with its performance. I'm glad you're looking into quality name components. Even if you dont get the highest end uber l337 stuff, stick with the good quality stuff and you should have little problems.

Not a bad line up vail.
let me make a few suggestions
Make sure the hard drive has a nice high RPM range (anything 7200 or faster) and the Ram... it might be a little more expensive, but I have heard that Corsair is the best... (read many reviews)
Not to mention they have little 'work' LED's on them that signify how hard the memory is being worked... only practical if you have a clear case, or dont mind playing with the case off though.

Yeah, I agree with LaRoacha on the MSI mobo, but as far as video goes... I've used nVidia for quite awhile and have been pleased. A couple of my friends use ATI, and are pleased.. so do as you wish. HOWEVER, as a tech, ATI's drivers are a fucking pain in my ass. Namely while installing ATI's wonderfuckingful ALL-IN-WONDER...
You should read lots of reviews before purchasing... but we can all agree on the AMD 64.

I disagree :D
Intel gets way more ghz. Look at reviews with an Amd Processor and an Intel for the same price. The intel knocks the shit outta it. Like with 2 6600gts. The intel knocks the shit outta the amd processor.
intel and nvidia for the win!

Well, we are not exactly comparing prices... it seems more of a matter of, which processor is simply better than the other
the ability to over-clock an intel surpasses that of an intel

ATI drivers are fine.. there are also quite a few third party driver packets out there. Omegadrivers.net used to have a boost in performance earlier on.. haven't kept tabs on 'em though
you really can't build a bad computer with name brand components.. general rule (that i've noticed) is to spend around 2 grand minus the cost of a display. Should let you play next-gen games on moderate settings.
on another note.. anyone running x64 ATI drivers?

Negative, but I am running the omega drivers you mentioned earlier. Ioscream pointed them out to me. They didnt seem to make too much as far as the amount of FPS I was getting, but it seemed to help stablize it.

Ghz doesnt always mean a better processor and AMD is much better than intel imo. It really depends on what you are doing with it though. For gaming I think AMD is better, but for multitasking and video stuff I would go with an intel. As far as video cards I liked ATI until the most recent cards where I have switched to nvidia.

beware the 250 gig HD. i heard from reputable ppl (debatable) that anything over 120 gig could spell potential problems in the future with strenuous use ie. formatting, defragging and so on. btw to format a 250 gig HD it would prolly take 1 hr. +

Could just split it up into two or more partitions.
dual 7800's will be my first nvidia cards lol.
