I did a lot of research and for my budget this seems to be the best bargain.
I know all the HDTV/ EDTV stuff and according to the reviews this does a superb job of up/down converting. I like the super-slim, stripped down plasmas. I prefer external boxes over built-ins, esp while the market is still in flux. I don't care for built-in speakers either.
There aren't many reviews on this particular model, but the previous edition TH-42PWD6UY and its consumer brother TH-42PD25UP are the models to beat below 5K. The big advantage this has over it's predecessor is double the half-life and CRT-compatible burn-in resistance.
Other features are it's
fanless cooling (Plasmas usually have loud fans),
optional input cards: you can buy modules to accept every current and predicted future input connector and standard - big +
I don't like the huge monster TVs, esp since for every 6", you need to add 1' of minimum distance. This seems a reasonable size - 42" = 8'.
Some of the very new 42" LCDs can compare in picture quality, but those cost 3-5x's as much.
