I just put together this new system:
AMD 64 3400+
Asus K8N
1 gig ram
Geforce 6800 GT

I am trying to maximize performance of this new system. I ran the stress test from:

http://www.futuremark.com/download/

and the video is a bit jumpy...ok it sucks. The FPS got down to 1-2 in the 3rd and 4th test. (scored a 2601 by the way) I am looking for suggestions on how to improve system performance. Let me share what I have done so far:

Freed up memory by turning off XP components

Changed the settings from lovely to power in:

set vertical sync to always off or off, that will speed up your fps by itself.

Set Vertical Sync and Anti-Aliasing to ALWAYS off.

Also It looks like you have a brand spanking new card but not brand spanking new drivers for your card. The best drivers I have found so far for Nvidia based cards is the 66.81 drivers. Download these bad boys and run a check again and see how things have improved.

First of all, I dont really see what is so bad about that score. What is it that you dont like about that score? I assume you got that running 3DMark 05.

As for the turn off V-Sync and AA advice. I think thats very bad advice and there are factors that should be taken into consideration when making changes to those settings.

i've never heard anyone saying that turning off aa and vs were bad. and i've only seen good things come of it. but that's just my experience.

If we are talking about CS its always been turn of VS and AA. If were talking about other games thats a different story. Some games run better with VS and AA turned on. The Nvidia driver I posted allows you to setup certain games in your settings and configure each game to a certain block of video setting that can be changed to those settings with a click of the game you want to play.

Nothing wrong with your score at all Gramps. I only got a 2379 score on the 3DMark05 and feel pretty good about my system. I was bottoming out at 1 fps on those tests also.

I didnt say they were bad. I just said that the blanket statement to turn them off is bad. I would rather have 70fps with AA at the max and VS on than 150fps with both disabled... get my drift?

How does it look and how does it run?

If you have a problem with a certain game then tweak for it, but I'm with AR here. Anything over 70 fps in a game benchmark is gravy. If I'm playing a game, I start with everything enabled. If I encounter slowdowns, then I shut off little by little. Otherwise, the AA & AF improve the picture a great deal. I don't like the jaggies and most PCs can handle most games. Depending on the game, I'd turn down music & sound effects before video. A game like Splinter Cell, on the other hand needs the 5.1 surround sound.
