For those of us not chronically addicted to the vaporous fumes of Steam and its Counter Strike: Source gasses several sequels are in Beta form ready for your patient, unpaid, testing efforts. Battle for Middle Earth 2 has both single and multiplayer demos. The single player side is a free download weighing in at a hefty 1.5 GB while the multi is about the same size but offers the Dwarven and Goblin races with which to bring all your Gimli on Goblin fantasies to life.
From a more strategic gaming side comes the multiplayer only beta of Heroes of Might and Magic V. One of the most critically acclaimed strategy games of all time, Heroes V looks to put a breath of fresh air back into stale lungs. With the utter disappoint of Heroes IV a brand new producer, Frank Cambounet, heading a very talented development team has promised to bring the HoMM series back to its former glory. While the release date of the game has been pushed back beyond March '06 this is not a bad thing. Upon finding out that the game would be published in a semi-finished state a group of fans banded together and formed a petition site, www.saveheroes.org, to protest. Along with several other well known fan sites they put an information ban on Heroes V until Ubisoft agreed to push the release date back so the developers could have more time to work on the game. After nearly 2500 signatures and five days of an information black out Ubisoft relented and pushed the date back; proving once again that the companies will listen to their fans/customers if pushed hard enough.
Both demos can be found here:
