Here's an interesting vid about a game called Spore. It's a god game that lets you control the development of a creature, starting at the single cell organism level all the way up to full size animal. You get to pick and choose what features they have, you can even mold and change your creature. Looks like it could be pretty cool.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8372603330420559198&q=spore

It's by Maxis so it's sort of in the same vein as Sim City and the Sims, etc. Only this is like those games on crack. You once you get far enough you take your creature and start making tribes of them. After that you can build cities. And you can edit pretty much everything. Make your own buildings, etc. You can buy buildings, tools for your creations, all kinds of stuff.

Beyond this even you can start to take over other cities and eventually take over the planet. You can eventually get a flying saucer and pick up stuff from your planet, zoom out some more, and go to other planets. You can drop things you've taken from your planet to these other planets and create life on it. The more I watch this the more amazing it all is. And all the environments are generated. There aren't stock models from what I understand. And all the animations, movements, etc, are extrapolated from what you create, not much is hard-coded. The guy makes a 3 legged creature and the game figures out how it should move, eat, attack.

I know, the more I watched it the more I couldn't believe it kept going farther and farther out. He even went to another planet by listening for life, then fought with the aliens and blew their planet up!

He kept saying things about creatures, cities, and worlds created by other players. Makes me wonder if it'll online, or at the very least LAN capable.

Ya that game looks Fantastic, no if you were paying close attention when he said the world he was showing was from another player he said he downloaded it, and that the game is not online based.

Sammie

awww crap, i really got the impression it was online. that's kind of disappointing but it still looks very cool.

zero
03-08-2006, 03:18 PM
I think it is online because he said he was downloading the other world asynchronously, meaning his client pulled the other player's world at will with no intervention from the other player. And he mentioned playing against other creatures run by other players, which I would hope meant interactively.

We shall see! whens this game due out anyway, I didn't see any dates.

zero
03-08-2006, 03:46 PM
Well the description for the vid said it was at a developer's conference last year, so it's probably not even done yet, no clue on a due date.

the info i've found is QT4 of this year. let's cross our fingers on this one guys.

Sammie

4th quarter of this year probably means we'll see it 2nd quater next year. or if they are like Valve, maybe 1st quarter 2010.

:p

Thunder

Sure I know how.

But since Neb already paid for it and he still owes me for digging out that hamster family he can send it to me for my birthday.

Plus, I'll GLADLY put more money into Will Wright's pocket if he keeps making kick ass games like he has for the past 20 years. It's nice to not have to pay but the same principles I have for not paying to play also makes me want to pay full retail (or coupon discounted) price for game that is worth my money. If a game like Dawn of War: Soulstorm comes out I can wait until it hits the bargain bins for less than $20. I still want the people who made the game to get the message that I like it and want them to make more but I don't NEED the game to exist. So I wait until I don't have to fork over my gas bill for the month to pay for it.

Especially anything that uses SecuRom, that piece of shit software can fuck your computer up pretty good.

Thought this was interesting (especially the last line)

"There has been a small firestorm concerning the Spore Digital Rights Management system. Well Maxis has been listening and Caryl Shaw, Online Producer for Spore, sent me a note about these concerns:

Hey Spore Fans -
We wanted to let you know that we've been hearing your concerns about the online authentication mentioned earlier this week. I didn't want to head into the weekend without getting back to you with some information about how Spore is planning on using this new system.

A few things we wanted you to know:

We authenticate your game online when you install and launch it the first time.
We'll re-authenticate when a player uses online features, downloads new content or a patch for their game.
The new system means you don't have to play with the disc in your computer. And if you are like me, always losing discs, this will be a huge benefit.
You'll still be able to install and play on multiple computers.
You can play offline.
We do hope that players will play online - sharing creatures, buildings and vehicles with other players is something that is unique to Spore and one of the coolest features of the game. Every day, when I play the Creature Stage, I get to see wacky and awesome new creatures from my Buddies on the team coming over the hill at me and I can't wait to see what happens when our creative, passionate community starts sharing their creations.

I'd love to write more - but I need to get back to work. We've got a game to finish. :-)

-caryl

Personally I don't see the big deal about the online DRM, especially for a game such as Spore which all but requires you to play online and communicate regularly with EA's servers. Heck, Spore is almost an MMORPG in considering all the online content that will be available for the game once it's released.

Oh yes, and if you think EA's DRM is harsh wait until you see the new DRM that Blizzard is working on for S2 and D3...."

I dunno, after 2 weeks of playing it, I'm not all that into it.

To me, its just a bad RTS.

So much the game revolves around the creation of creatures, vehicles etc., that when you strip all that out, whats left is not that great of a game.

I can see where this would have big appeal to "the sims" people who spent hours downloading and sharing wallpapers and shit..but I never got into that either.

It's creative and unique, just not my cup of tea.

I think that was poostick. We were talking to Syndrome last night and he said the exact same thing. Although, I would disagree just a bit now that I've entered space travel. The game still hasn't made me go "Wow! This is friggin awesome". Although, it did make me tear down my PC and think I was having hardware issues. Something with the sound...High sound quality+my sound card = reboot loop.

Nimmy

Here's my vote.

Pro: Spore is a flashy game with a good concept and wonderfully unique gameplay.

Con: The wonderfully unique gameplay isn't exactly, "in detail". Once you pass the cell stage, you pass the cell stage. Not much changes in each layer of existance. Even the ICBM's and such are pretty boring, and for some reason you have to hit a enemy base directly with a mega bomb and then still - you don't hit it half the time even tho its blowing a blast past the city.

But dropping bombs is sort of pointless, and the endless tools they have are repetative. I'd rate it up there with as much fun to play as Deer Hunter 3.

Then again it does enable you to have at least 10 wonderful hours of fun. Easily usable cheats. But if that's worth 50 dollars... you tell me.

Thunder
09-15-2008, 12:07 PM
Ok, I played it for all of an hour and had a blast. But that might of been the stars in my eyes. Have a friend who got it and said that the non-space stages were pretty quick and did not have alot of depth. Seems to be the general issue everyone has. Not enough depth. The GREAT thing is this can be fixed with a content patch. As creative as the game is I think we can expect at least user created content. I still plan to get the game based on that hour of play. I've always enjoyed sandbox type games like this so it's what I'm looking for in a game.
