I figured I should make a new thread for this, I dont think many realize that we have been talking about this game in some depth on the other forum Mach started "where I have been"

One aspect of the game, is lock picking. Probably one of the things in this game that makes you want to crack your keyboard over your knee and throw your mouse across the room.

But here is something that might he helpful. As many of my close friends haven noticed, VISUALLY, there are some hints that can help you out picking these tedious locks. There seems to be a pattern to when the appropriate time is to 'lock' the tumblers in place.

While tapping the tumbler with your lock pick, you will notice there are some 'fast' ones, and some slower ones. You may have also noticed that the slower moving tumblers are usually the ones you can/want to lock in to place.

The slow tumblers usually come immediately after a 'fast' one. So, tap, tap, tap away at the tumbler, and wait until you get one to click up in to place really quickly, your next tap will probably be the one you want to attempt to _lock_ in to place.

Doing some more research, I have found that there is also audio clues you can listen to, to help you distinguish when is the appropriate time to click the tumbler in to place.

Here is the link to the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLgP0aJHRuU

The person here explains that you can hear almost like a double-clicking sound on the tumbler when it is the appropriate time to lock it in to place. He claims that when you hear that double click, that is when you want to lock the tumbler in to place.

Hope this helps... happy lock picking!

One more tip for you thieves out there...

If you want to score a decent amount of money in one raiding, I suggest going to the jewlery store. (In the main city, I'm sorry I dont remember the name... go to the merchants town... you'll find it)

Dont waste your time picking the Hard/Very Hard locks on all of the display cases, for they yeild cheap murchandise... rather, find the case located on the front desk and near the door that can not be picked, but requires a key.

Now, this may be dependant on your sneaking skill, but this is what I suggest to you. Wait around until about 1AM, and sneak in to the store.

Go upstairs, pick the easy door pick up there, and sneak behind the owner of the store (who should be sleeping soundly on his bed).

Sneak around behind the merchant and hit F5 (quicksave) for you may not get it on the 1st try. Click on the sleeping murchant to pick-pocket him. I suggest only attempting to steal the key from him, for anything else included would add on to your chances of him waking up and catching you taking things out of his pockets (hehe).

Once you have the key, go downstairs and open up those 'special' cases. There are many items in both that are worth hundreds of gold. The one on the front desk itself carries 2 necklaces (one worth $200, the other worth $100) and an array of rings... two of them being worth $160/each.

Yeah, bob was saying sounds can help. Still harder then it looks at times. I have my streaks.

My question is: How do you capture souls so I can recharge the 'assassin' blade and my customized bow?

Nebula
04-12-2006, 10:27 AM
ok..

So I am still not completely clear as to how to do this, perhaps some one else can explain... but here is the information I have gathered...

Sylver, you are further along in the mages guild than I, perhaps you have already ran in to this person they speak of (stealing this from some one elses forums)

"the non conjuration guy offers recharge in chorrol mage guild."

"Recharge them in any of the Mage guild buildings in any town! Also in Capital city Shops area. Plenty of shops specialise in it! Rhindirs staffs and that magical emporium I think!"

The 2nd quote there looks promising... perhaps we should talk to more people in the mages guild buildings and see what they have to offer as far as either a sould capture spell, or recharging the weapon right then and there for you.

"there are a few options, either goto an aeylid (thats probably not spelt correctly but ho hum) ruin and find some vala stones, one vala stone will recharge all your weapons, or find some soul gems and trap some souls, you can then use these to charge items, or the most costly is to get someone in the mages guild to do it for you."

sylverarrow
04-12-2006, 10:37 AM
Well I have some soul gems. I used to have a lot of them but they were 'hot' and I sold them, plus if you have the right ones they can be easily worth 200+ a piece. I have a few again now since I know what I need them for. But how do you go about stealing someone's soul? I'll have to poke around in the mage's guild again to see how much it costs. I have 5500+ gold right now, so money isn't a issue.

I need to repair my weapons again, I need to get in the habit of checking them everytime I do a quest. If you get a chance play around in the sewers, they are pretty big and under lay the whole Imperial City. You get to hack down some gobblins and you can get to any part of the city from under there, including popping up into people's basements.

I haven't played it but saw this while looking at something unrelated. It's supposed to be a really good mod for Oblivioin

bad zero!

no modding yet.. (at least not for me)

I dont want to change anything about the game until I feel as if I am 'done' with it... then I will have fun tweaking it

ok, call me an addict - but I went home for lunch today, and instead of plopping myself down in front of the TV for 30 minutes or so, I decided to play a little.

2 things...

1- there is 500 gold pieces in the chest that sits right outside of the arena where the guy is to 'place bets' The lock is a "very hard" one, but its worth it if you have the patience.

2- I just became the Arena Champion.... there is no one left for me to fight. However, there is a "Grand Champion" match that I could do.. where I have to fight some guy who will probably continue to whoop my ass.. being there are no rules in the Grand Champion matches.. and you can also loot your fallen foes items...

speaking of taxes

did anyone e-file through turbo tax?

This is the first time I did and I was suppossed to get an email from the state and fed in order to sign it electonically and I still have not receieved anything. Granted I only did my taxes last week but its the 12th and still no word. I'm starting to get worried. If I dont do the e-signature, I dont think they are considered offically filed.

Anyone else file this way?

I should have my tax money by friday and then I will promptly write a check to pay off the credit card that we put the computers on.

That wasnt the original plan. I was just going to pay in cash. I forgot all about the tax refund.

Now I can use the extra cash to make a nice payment on my equity line.

I owe, I owe, I owe.....so off to work I go................

Okay Snk,

About that Assassin mission last night. There was a another way of doing this. You were right that that was the only way to go but if your sneak was high enough along with your aerobics skill. That main part where I had to wait for him, which I did. I found the easy way on my way out. He was standing in a place impossible for me to get by without waiting oh the 15 damn minutes for him to move. So halfway up the wall was a little edge, lip if you will, which you would fall off of if you skills are not high enough. So I just ran around the lip of the wall, all the way to the door I need to get too and hopped down and I was out. I walked right above is head and he didn't noticed, took me a matter of seconds to exit other then the 20-25 minutes of getting in.

You remember how I can go from the highest place in a area/house and glide down off the walls and not injure myself? My sneak is extremely high for the fact that I sneak most of the time playing as well as my jump and/or aerobics. That's the key for those. I think I could have found a way to jump up to the edge/lip of the wall and ran around him going in as well.

Hell yeah, Neb had to ride south of Cheydinhal, took him awhile. That was the closest city/place to start from. Took him so long the horse got tired and collapsed twice on him before he got there. Very beautiful in the mountains, found a trail which lead to a wood bridge across the lake. It was nice and peaceful except the random wolves that would attack out of no where. Just on the way there he found like 4 to 5 things to enter as well. Good thing about going to them once, you can always zone there later on.

I got a few things yesterday. Im sure neb did too since I saw him do this quest but I got a new horse from the Assasin guild named Shadowmare. She is fast as shit and is all black with red eyes. Its all a very agressive horse...I got off to pick up a item and she ran off to kill a wolf

That and I bought a house yesterday...its bad ass ill have to show it to you both. Two stories sucka! It is expensive to furnish it though  Also I noticed that you CAN zoom in with the bow if your a apprentice. Just right click when you have a arrow pulled back. Its killler! That and I found out the farther away you hit them with the arrows the better.

hehe.. this was the horse Sylver was talking about that I traveled with... I leveled up SO much recently, its not even funny.

Sylver was like DAMN, you got ANOTHER level. So I found a bed to rest on... come to find out, I had more like 4 levels. So I am now level 15.

The ride was awesome... I am still blown away by the graphics in this game. The horse is bad ass, and so is the claymore that I stole from one of the assassin guild members (the vampire).

I want to join the fighters guild now and do some of their missions. Its kind of funny, I dont know if they do this to all people, or if it is because I am now kind of "higher level" (I suppose) but people in the fighters guild walk by me and they're like LOOK AT THE MUSCLES ON YOU!!!!

... but I couldnt join because one of my previous missions caused me to have a bounty on my head. I was to assassinate some one who was swimming in the water.. only problem was - he would always have guards watching him while he was doing this (which was the only time I could assassinate him)... so I just recently paid off all of my bounty to the thieves guild (for half price)... and now I should be good to go!

anyone know anything about the level cap (if there is one) in Oblivion? I read somewhere it was as high as 255... which is ridiculously high...

Being I am now level 15, I might go back in to the Arena and try to fight the grand champion again.

I was able to bring his life down to about 1/3 before (being level 10 or 11).. so I should be able to take him down by now... I hope.

sylverarrow
04-14-2006, 11:25 AM
255 would sound right if there was a cap. From what I understand there isn't or it's set really high. I was reading their forums and they're people in the 40s+. I would imagine it will take some time to get there. I heard your skills/attributes can max out at 100. But you have alot of skills to work on if that is the case. My agility, I think it is, is at 95 already.

Speaking of the arena, I need to get in there and fight some peoples. I have fought one dude and won but that is it so far. I want to find the place were you can fist fight people, that would be fun. David said it was around the arena area.

So just an update.....I went out for a while over the weekend and explored alot. Ive gotten all kinds of sweet armor and even a full set of glass weopans that do amazing damage. Then some sweet plate armor that gives me attributes. But as I was fighting some damn Vampires I got the vampire disease.

So then I had to a long ass quest to get rid of it but thats not the worst. During a previous quest I killed a member of the mages guild that I had just joined. So I got kicked out and the dude that tells me how to rejion the guild was the only one that can help me cure the vampire effect. So I had to get 20 vampire ashes just to get back in then had to do a long ass quest just to get that taken off. JESUS be carefull when fighting vamps cause that quest sucked.

So now im level 19 and making KILLER money my house is nearly furnished and im not even stealing anymore cause I make better money looting. I have 20k extra cash right now just sitting in the house cause I have nothing I need to buy. So its nice to be able to spend extra money on training.

This game is great....I can see myself replaying it when I "beat" the game. Even though the game is never really over......

sylverarrow
04-17-2006, 10:08 AM
haha, yeah I been doing the assasin's guild quests still. I had a drop near this tomb so I went in. I came across vamps but no worries, my sneak is so high if I stay in the dark and shoot them with arrows they'll either run around looking for me or run 2 feet and stop. If they run around looking after a few seconds they'll be like 'Damn rats' or 'It must of been nothing', funny thing is they can walk right up next to me when I'm hidden in the dark and not even see me. I think thats funny for the fact my sneak shot with a bow almost kills them in one hit. It's great. I did buy the piece of shit house for 2k in the Imperial City just to have a place to drop shit off. I'm 100 pounds lighter now so I can loot/steal more.

I guess Argonians aren't immune to Vampire's Disease. It states they are immune to disease, guess that is one of the exceptions. So is it a touch? I don't do to much sword fighting unless I really need too. Ranger/Thief for the win. I had to assassinate that crazy argonian in the flooded cave. Was really easy for me since I'm argonian and can breathe under water as well.

Funny thing is I'm in the Mage's, Fighter's, Thieve's, Assassin's, Arena (if that counts), and Blade's Guilds all at the same time. And when I had to assassinate that whole family off, one of them were in the Fighter's Guild... haha, I haven't been kicked out yet but we'll see.

I'm been doing some Thief quests now. I'm on to better things I guess since I don't goto the same guy anymore. I report to some lady in a different city now. I'm going to horde some gold in soon so I can have a better house.

Snk

Ya I did alot of the theifs guild one. I have to report to the lead guy now. Hes got this odd plan going  but it was one of his quests that I killed a mage in and got in trouble for it

The vampires must have gotten me cause I do use my sword alot. I usually use my bow for a initial attack or if somethen is tough and wont stop chasing me ill tkae it down that way.

I have the spell now to charge the soul gems so now im getting constat recharges on my magic items. Its teh greatness!

Nice, I need to get that. What I been doing is using them and selling them when they are empty unless it does good damage. Right now i have this Bow of Fire and it does 14 damage plus does 15 pts of fire damage. I think it's time to enter another Oblivion Gate this evening.

ya, so I finally hit lvl 10 yesterday, got grand champion in the arena last night in like 3 hours, bought the manor in Anvil that had the quest attached to it, beat that and got the house all cleaned up. Almost done with the fighters guild quests, found a ton of oblivion gates in BFE, starting the shadowmajigger whatever that was guild quests, for murdering people that is.

Got kick ass equipment (which is why the arena was so easy), money, bitches, uhhmmm, a horse on 24's, annnndddd I think I'm gonna start back on the main story line soon.

Damn JB and I thought we binged. You must of played all weekend. I'm level 14, slowly working my way up. You talking about the Assassin's guild? I don't remember the name of it, that sounds right since the horse you get is called something likes 'Shadowmare'. I should go back to the arena and finish it up.

JB, did you do the quest the Grand Champ. lets you have? You have to talk to him before you battle him. I did it and got a permenant +2 on Strength, +2 Agility and on something else. I need to spend some time down in Anvil, been there once I think. I have done 2 Gates, the one at the beginning for the story and the one that is slightly northeast of Leyawiin (which the creatures were easy but it was a fucking maze). Yeah as I keep riding around I keep seeing more and more Oblivion Gates. They are fucking everywhere.

Almost done with the fighters guild quests, found a ton of oblivion gates in BFE, starting the shadowmajigger whatever that was guild quests, for murdering people that is.

Got kick ass equipment (which is why the arena was so easy), money, bitches, uhhmmm, a horse on 24's, annnndddd I think I'm gonna start back on the main story line soon.

lol:lol: Horse rollin on 24's FTW... did it come with hydraulics too?

heheh hell ya I binged the shit outa that game last weekend. Played all day sat from the time I woke up (10am) till the time I went to sleep (3am). levels really aren't that hard to come by when all you do is work on your major skills. I gained a lot of levels from the arena since it used 2 of my main skills which would be heavy armor and blade. I did hella lot of quests for the fighters guild too, got some dragon knight armor and that badass sword with the gold hilt that looks like feathers (13 dmg currently with my blade skill, which is journeyman at like 68 or so). Ya I plan to check out the oblivion gates I found near leyawiin, 4 to be exact. I totally pwned the arena though, only battles I had any trouble at all with were the ones when you fight 3 opponents at the same time.

Ok,
So I picked it up. Now I know how low end my vid card is.

I get a frame rate of about 1 per 5 sec. So only a fraction of a frame per second. I tried turning down everything, but no effect.

Looks like its time to spring for a higher end card. :(

haha I see the temptation was to much for you bro! Great to see ya playing if only we could all run together. Its a great game though and last night a few were on vent playing the game at the same time

The game definatly requires a good video card. Even my revamped machine cant handle it on high with a 1280x1024 resolution.

Also I ran a little experiment last night....Neb and Sylver know about this. But what I did is set my guy up to swim against a bridge so that he wouldnt go anywhere and just pressed Q to make him swim on his own. Left the house for a few hours and came back to him still swimming. My athletics skill was 52 when I started and last night it finished off at 65 before I stopped it.

Well I think I'm continuing the game. I completed a quest that was buried at the bottom of all my quests and I found the Mystic Dawn's cave or suppose to be. I'm going to check that out.

I also finished the Assassin's guild quests so now I'm the guild leader of my own and I get to get new recruits. I haven't played with it much, my first week only brought 200 gold in so I need to look into this more. But with the recruits I can have them follow me to do missions. Supposably I can set up assassinations with my members and they are to do them or help me with them?? Not sure yet, I need to play around with it. I have 2 new recruits and my loyal servant. I had one of the recruits following me and when I got into a battle he was no where to be found... go figure. Hopefully he went back.

yes the sneaking against a wall does work, only reason I am doing that is because its a minor skill for me and would take damn near forever to become a master at it, and I have no patience.

Damn, I am so far behind the times, I just bought Elder Scrolls 3 for my XBox (the 1st one, I refuse to conform till Halo 3 comes out) and I havent been able to peel myself off it except for work and some drunken go-kart driving.

I guess I should apologize for resurrecting this old thread and wasting the min and a half of your time I just took  but just for useless knowledge, Elder Scrolls kicks ass.

This is funny you brought this back up GB. I just installed Oblivion on my new rig. I think I have the twitch again... It looks so much better then my old rig.

JW, when summer break comes you can bust it back out!

The look is very good. The game begining is very good. The combat AI is very good. The over all game play is very good.

The game as a whole sucks pritty bad. The adaptive nature of the environment to your level Sucks big time. The end of the game really sucks.

The total lack of NPC AI makes this game a bit of a flop IMO. The fact that I was able to kill anything, anywhere, anytime and not get hit back, means there are loop holes in the game. If you stick to doing only the story line this is at most one month of game play and your done.

If I am the MASTER of the guild, I should not have underlings telling me "go away Im busy now". It just isn't right.

I was all into this one untill I completed it and I said to myself, "Thats it?!!"

I haven't beat it yet but the game is good all around. I understand about the AI, hopefully they'll fix that with the next one. But I was doing everything but the story line. I started a new toon since I had to reinstall. Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. That's if I pursue it further.
