So my monitor is about to die. Currently, it gets dark out of no where, and then it will go back to normal. Usually giving it a little shake will fix it LOL.
Therefore, I know that soon it will be completely useless, and I will need a new one. What I want from you, is suggestions. I am looking for a CRT, most likely flat screen, in any reasonable price range.
Graff, you said you have a flat screen CRT. What kind, and would you recommend it?
Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.
Any and all thread hijacking will be frowned apon.
Any and all self nude pictures will be examined and scrutinized.

i've got a 17 inch thats just sittin here. i'll have to clear it with lady laura lye, but we might be willing to let it go for cheap
I love Viewsonic monitors, they're built well and aren't at the top of the price range. Look for a 19" Flat Screen. the Graphics (G) series is about the sharpest, meant for people in the graphics industry. Like a G90f might be good. If you're tight on space get an LCD flat panel, but you won't beat the clarity of the CRT, which I prefer for games.

I can't even look at a CRT for 10 minutes or so without getting a headache.

Adjust that refresh rate!!
Depends on your budget
I have an NEC/ Mitsubiushi Diamond Plus 200 22" CRT. It's a Diamondtron (like Trinitron) so it's flat. It's a beautiful monitor and "pro" quality. You can still find it all over the web for @$300 and under. I bought mine for >$900 years ago. The ONLY thing that I don't like about it is that the power button is squishy with no "click."
I just bought 2x Viewsonic VP930b 19" LCDs last month. They run @$350/ each when not on sale. Newegg had them on sale for $300/ w free shipping and (shhh) no sales tax. They are rated well all around for gaming, office, movies, and most graphics work on all the regular sites (Tom's, Anandtech, CNet). I was really researching monitors and these are the best LCDs in the prosumer line right now. I was really looking at a 21" Gateway WXGA for $600, but a lot of problems were reported on the DVI (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=960883&highlight=Gateway+FPD2185)connector. I figured why buy 1x21", when I can buy 2x19" for the same price!
I use all 3. The CRT for image editing/ gaming and the 2 LCDs for office work/ net, pallets, email, etc. The only reason I use the CRT for gaming is that #1: it's in the center, #2: it's bigger, #3 it has the AGP video card to itself and the LCDs share a PCI card.
I know you wanted a CRT, but if you aren't into serious image editing, the Viewsonics are fantastic for every other use and they are much easier to read on. Best Buy or COmpUSA stock them and you can burn a DVD to run a test to see.

I'm with sylverarrow, but actually LCD's are even starting to give me a headache if there is more than one near me. It may be that at work I use two different computers and even though the refresh rate is the same, one goes through a KVM switch that I am thinking alters the image slightly (it's a cheap KVM).
Anyway on to monitors. I would rather buy a widescreen LCD. Dell and Apple both have great monitors and they aren't that expensive. Picture isn't quite as clear as CRT, but it looks great for WoW. Also, I like one widescreen better than a dual monitor setup. Something about the space in the middle pisses me off. Just my thoughts though

Might be the KVM, Vic. I have one here in the office, it's a Belkin OmniView Pro2 (I believe, I just got it in last week, replaced a older OmniView) with a Dell 17" Flat Panel and I don't seem to have that problem with both. I haven't had too much time with the new one yet. What KVM are you using?

I've been using an LCD for about 5 years now. My first one was a Samsung 19" with DVI. Great monitor, great picture. After that I swore I would never buy another CRT especially when I had a LAN party to go to or when moving. The backlight went out on that about 6-7 months ago and I went to Best Buy and bought a new Samsung monitor.
It was utter shit and I returned it as soon as my Dell 20" Widescreen LCD came in. I swear I will never own another CRT. I know you asked for CRT specifically but you also wanted any and all suggestions. My suggestion is to check out some properly configured, high quality, LCDs. LCDs are smaller, use less power and put out less heat. In addition, I think LCDs look better, but thats just a matter of preference.
How come you are not interested in a flat panel?

I just replaced all my CRTs with LCD's and I would never look back.
The picture quality is great, i have a lot more space on my desk and a lot less dust to deal with.
I bought 3 Benq's

LCD's aren't really my thing for gaming. I have one set up for text and browsing etc. but when I game, I love CRTS. I tried using my LCD some, and didn't really like it (I have a Dell, don't know the model). I also have two LCDs and a CRT at work, and the CRT is the only thing I an stand playing on. Maybe the LCDs are junk, I dont know. I think I'll check some of them out when the time comes. But until this thing dies, I will be sticking with it.
I'm wondering how long LCDs will be around if this new technology takes off. They're the size of LCDs but the quality of CRT

I read all the articles and everything too about how LCDs are inferior to CRTs for gaming. If you have a quality LCD, I am not convinced that this is true. I play all kinds of games, Battlefield 2, CS, Civ 4, etc and I have never had a complaint. A properly configured LCD with DVI is the best way to go as far as I'm concerned.
As an added bonus, my Dell 2005FPW has USB ports on the side for easy connections, supports DVI, VGA, S-Video, and Composite (NOT component) inputs. I can also use PIP with the S-Video and Composite connections. My main rig is connected via DVI and I have a spare computer that is connected via VGA. I can switch inputs with the touch of a button.
I think if you read any recent reviews of LCD monitors you will find that the "gaming stigma" has all but fallen off the radar.
Good luck with your search. I always love having a reason to buy new computer gear!

I'm satisfied with my 17 KDS CRT Flat Screen. I usually sit about 12 inches away anyway while I'm gaming. Its like having a big screen when you do that. The refresh rate is set to it's highest and doesn't give me a headache. (at 1024x768...high enough res for me). It was $200.
Of course, I'd need to get a new desk if I wanted anything better. This 30 year old drafting table shakes back and forth just from typing.

i have the same exact monitor as AR and love it. I never notice ghosting on it, even when switching between really dark colors to bright colors. just make sure you get one with a quick response time. Also the quality seems just as good for anything I've used it for. And I agree with sammy, the work space you save with an LCD is awesome

I was set on CRT as well a few months back. I went shopping and after seeing the price, space, power difference, I went LCD. I really like it. I will not be buying another CRT.
Also, if your hearing is still .... young, you may notice the high piched sound that comes from CRT systems. This includes CRT TV's. I use to hear it but now I must be too old, I remember being able to tell the TV was on in the house by that sound. Could it be this that is giving you the head pain?

Ha! I used to hear that sound also. I don't notice it to much these days. Of course, after clubbing for ten + years, I hear a high pitched noise in my ears all the time now. lol
