View Full Version : Am I Wrong Or Not?

I wouldn't think twice about it, but I've been told twice, by 2 different people that I never see what I do as wrong. In a lot of situations I don't think I'm not any worse than other people.

Scenario. I spent a few hours working on a document. We have a reliable setup at work and I didn't think to save. All of a sudden alarms start going off on my Air Traffic System and so I immediately divert my attention. I deduced I have a hardware problem, which requires troubleshooting in another room.

So I quickly lock my PC and hurry to the other room. You lock the PC to let other people know you are busy working on something. Or so I thought. These are shared XP PCs but FUS is disabled. As I'm leaving, a guy from the next shift comes in. I didn't tell him what I was doing or where I was going. I was in a hurry and he's worthless anyway.

I spend about a 1/2 hr troubleshooting. I walk back to my office and my computer is logged off and someone else's desktop is up.

There is another open PC in the room. As soon as I see that, I know he sat at this PC, saw that the computer was locked and unplugged it and plugged it back in to reboot it.

He says he didn't know where I was and thought I had left for the day. My backpack was sitting right by the desk in plain sight to the whole room. He didn't notice it. He didn't call into the other room to check nor did he think that I got off at 400pm (or later) every day, but it was only 230pm.

When I asked him "did you unplug this computer" (in a nice tone), he said "Yes. I have to work on my tool program." Point blank. End of story. The tool program is NOT time critical.

He didn't say anything like "oh shit dude, I thought you had gone for the day." Nothing like that.

He said it was my own fault for not saving. Not an apology, nothing.

He said "You never see what you do wrong."

Does he have a legitimate argument in that if I see a PC as logged in and locked but no one is sitting at it, it is OK to unplug it to unlock it? Even if other PCs are open.

What can possibly be said that I did wrong and this is all my fault? Someone explain the opposing side, please. Obviously I need help in empathizing or symmpathizing or whatever psychobabble. I just cannot see how this is my fault and I have a legitimate argument for being angry with him. He doesn't see what he did as wrong at all.

The only argument in his favor that I see is this: "Fuck ups fuck shit up. You know I'm a fuck up. Act defensively. Save."

No the file wasn't recoverable and I don't have a habit of leaving the PC locked after I leave for the day.

heh.. damn dude...

yeah, its a rule at my work - (I know for you its a different situation...but) if you go to a users machine to work on it, and it is locked. Even through we have admin to log them out and log ourselves in, we are not suppose to do that... let alone unplug the damn while in the midst of it running.

what a punk, you should have back handed him

same. we never tocuh anyone elses machine if its locked. I agree with you 100%.
he is a dick, you are not wrong (i think you should have saved to avoid this whole mess, BUT its still his fault)

Its like saying you should have had your seat belt on when some asshole hit you (still his fault, but you could have done somethign to lessen the damage done)

It's kind of hard to tell exactly what your setup is at work. Obviously the machine(s) is/are shared. If this is an environment typical of a public library or something like that then you are a dumb ass for not saving your shit.

However, I find it unlikely that you would do something stupid like that. In this case, I would give you the benefit of the doubt and say that the retarded asshole who just HAD to unplug a locked machine so that he can use it is, indeed, a retarded asshole.

By the way, whats the point of locking the machine if a restart clears it up? More useless Microshaft "security".

You should have saved your work. Its your responsibility.

Well,
For what it is worth, The other guy is a dick head. You are slightly in the wrong as you should have saved your work. If I get up to get a tea/coffe I save my work, even on my own privit computer. If someone comes to my Cube to talk to me, I save my work. I may be a bit anal, but it is a habit I have, to ensure I do not have to do anything twice. I hate having to do something again because it was erased / lost.

But that aside, your co-worker should not even working there if he can not even notice your backpack, is where it usualy is, when you are there. It has been a long time since I worked on public comps. I do not remember this kind of problem, usually there were several so no one would ever unplug a comp to reboot it.

I agree the guys a douche but you always, always gotta save your own ass.

One ctrl 'S' and this is a moot point.

I agree that your co-worker is a dickhead. That is disrespectful without a doubt. He seems to lack common sense if he didn't notice your bags and such. If I'm scripting I save every few minutes or more depending, especially if I get up from my computer and lock it, I defiantly save then. Before we got battery backups on the work stations here I was working on something, wasn't too important but we had a brown out and was enough to cut the machine off and I lost it. I had to retype it all again, and like Sckoarn stated, I also hate redoing something that I have done. Save every 5 minutes at the least. Before long it will be habit.

I work at several different locations. I travel a good bit for my job. So I am always using someone elses computer.
I hate it when someone doesnt log off and I have to do an entire reboot to get my log in.
However, if I do run into that situation I always make sure that person is no longer in the building.

Yes, its obvious you should have saved but your co-worker should have had the common courtesy to see if you were still there before he just took over your work space and unplugged your computer

I think a back hand is in order.

Hell the least he could have done was apologize, even if he didn't mean it.
Its called diplomacy.

He should learn it.

both of you are wrong....he is more wrong than you though...

you should have saved, especially on a shared PC, but that lazy fucktard should have used the other computer if it was open

Well, the argument was so loud yesterday that the neighboring tenants in the building filed a report. I didn't tell my boss because I never involve the boss in arguments, but after they filed the report, well,... the cat's out of the bag. We'll see what kinds of reprimands we get.

I don't know. If I got up to take a shit, does that give him the right to just walk in and unplug my PC to get on it? If I were to take a break and run up to the soda machine, he can just pull the plug? It's worse that I was working an emergency. There was another one open is what gets me.

Even if I were to have saved my work, I would have been pissed that he thinks he can commandeer a workstation at will when I'm in the middle of something.

You should always save your work especially in a shared enviroment, it's just common sense. But the guy is a fuktard. It sounded to me like he did it just to fuck with you.
