Just like old times, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal are celebrating. The former Lakers teammates became fathers again Monday when their wives gave birth to girls.
Gianna Maria-Onore Bryant was born at 2:03 a.m. in Orange County, Calif. Kobe and Vanessa Bryant are already parents to 3-year-old Natalia.
Less than three hours later, Shaquille and Shaunie O'Neal became parents for the sixth time when Mearah Sanaa O'Neal was born at 4:57 a.m. in a South Florida hospital.
It's the third girl for the O'Neals, with Mearah joining sisters Taahirah and Amirah and brothers Myles, Shareef and Shaqir, who turned 3 last month.
Bryant and O'Neal are both in the playoffs. Bryant's game-winner in overtime Sunday gave the Lakers a 3-1 lead in their series against the Phoenix Suns. The Heat and Chicago Bulls are tied at two games apiece in their series.

I'm a Lakers fan, but I was really surprised to see them in the Playoffs this year. They have played marginally all season and I thought they had a few more years to gell into a playoff team. I'm still uncomfortable calling them a "playoff team."
I'm very surprised they are beating the Suns considering they lost to them 3 times in the regular season.

i am also a lakers fan... lived in la for 6 years growing up.. so...
really, the only thing i can think of that made this happen, is perhaps something phil jackson has done with the guys....
i dont understand what could have changed them from the reg season, where kobe was their team... literally... to the playoffs, where everyone shares the ball, kobe scores 24ppg... instead of 41 ppg or some shit...
it kind of makes me happy, although i dont see how they could win it all....
I hate idiots who correct grammar as a way to compliment their pathetic self-esteem, however, in the interest of correcting a common mistake that actually really bugs me for no other reason than I love words and langauge allow me to point out:
i·ron·ic adj. Poignantly contrary to what was expected or intended
Though I realize this thread quickly devolved into a discussion of NBA playoffs I think Chubbs' original intent was something along the lines of the significance of two formerly close but now questionable friendships are sharing a couple of important life experiences (playoffs, babies, etc.) in common.
'The words ironic, irony, and ironically are sometimes used of events and circumstances that might better be described as simply “coincidental” or “improbable,” in that they suggest no particular lessons about human vanity or folly.' Which are concepts more closely associated with the idea of irony.
I will let you off with a warning for now but this nurse who masquerades and moonlights as an English teacher is occassionally peeved by the miniscule.
So, Chubbs, to answer the question posited in the title of your thread - no, it isn't ironic at all. The fact that an accused rapist and his formerly close friend both had baby girls on the same day is not an incongruity in what is expected but simply a wierd coincidence.
But some people, (like me), don't believe in coicidence at all, actually. So maybe there is something special going on here...but it isn't ironic.

"If a diabetic, on his way to buy insulin, is killed by a runaway truck, he is the victim of an accident. If the truck was delivering sugar, he is the victim of an oddly poetic coincidence. But if the truck was delivering insulin, ah! Then he is the victim of an irony."
~George Carlin
In one of his books that I have he has a big section about how people miss use this word.

i dont really understand why you posted that, 30, to begin with.. the sole purpose on your mind must have been to piss me off.

I saw the same misuse of the word ironic in the title of a news article about Cruise and Shields having their babies on the same day.
Yes CNN used the word ironic in the title but it still did not make the usage a correct one.
I too, get annoyed by the spelling nazi's but I also have a secret pet peeve. I cant stand it when people mix up the words there and their or your and you're.
It drives me nuts, but then again I'm always screwing up the word affected and effected.
eh, whatever

Wow, lighten up, buttercup.
My sole purpose (and maybe my soul purpose, too) was to make an attempt at humor which you seem to have taken as some kind of slight towards you; I was just joking around.
Do you really think I consider myself the "grammar police"? I can barely spell as it is.
But I do love words and language with a passion.

I have no idea what you mean? How do I sound like you? I was making a joke that you seem to have misinterpreted as an insult.
The "grammar police" and "letting you off with a warning" is a j - o - k - e. I am fairly certain that even if such organizations invested with such powers existed I would eschew their company.
And, btw, no it ISN"T ironic; there is no irony in the content of that article, whomever may have written the title to it. Irony usually is associated with human vanity, folly or the cruelty of fate. What's ironic about it that little blurb you posted?
Sheesh, I'm a internet friend - I wouldn't go out of my way to "piss you off". Try decaf maybe?

Doh! Suns win. 2:3 now. I don't know if the Lakers would have won if Kobe hadn't been removed. Then again, I would have been removed if some fuck clotheslined me too.
Sac -San Ant series is pretty nice to watch.
On the side topic
I hate it when people screw up sayings, cliches, figures of speech...
Like when "for all intents and purposes" becomes "for all intense purposes." I don't know how many times I've seen that one. What kind of "intense purposes" are there? There are a ton of others but it's too early to think.

Nope, I don't think so. It is simply a coincedence. Improbable, yes, ironic no.
