I got a couple questions about the game.
I have started 2 characters.
In the Mage Guild halls, you should be able to buy spells there? If so is there a particular time that they sell? If you take something from the guild hall will they still sell spells to you? I took some items from the basement.
Anyone become a Vampire yet?
At what level did you try and when did you finish the first Gate?
At what level did you manage to join the Mage Guild?
One of my toons is a Theifmage kind of, Find it very hard to fight. The other is pure caster, and she rips through stuff like its no problem.

the level of your character really shouldn't matter all that much since the creatures in the game progress in levels as you do, so you can try all of those things you want to do and not worry about being overpowered. I think.

Actually I haven't been playing any computer games lately. I played HL2DM a few times for something different. Just picked up CS and Oblivion again yesterday. Last thing I wanted to do was look at a monitor last week. Plus when I pop in vent no one is on. I must have bad timing.

You should be able to buy spells from just about anyone in the mages guild. Talk to a guild member, then where there usually is an icon to 'buy' there should be one there that resembles buying spells from them. Also, certain people can 'train' (icon looks like a person meditating) if you are ever interested in advancing yourself in a particular field of magic. There isnt a specific time they sell, it should be all of the time. Also, taking items shouldnt make a difference. If you are a guild member, you can take the items without anyone even caring.. but if you were sneaking around and 'stole' the iteams... as long as you werent caught, you should be just fine.
Anyone become a Vampire yet?
I still have not became a vampire myself... I would rather not be bitten.. hehe. Although I know there is some cool stuff you can get/do while you are a vampire... so I've been told.
At what level did you try and when did you finish the first Gate?
I closed my first gate almost immediately. I think JB is right to some degree. It almost appears as if enemies advance in level as you do. So feel free to enter any oblivion gate that you come by. A good practice is probably to handle the oblivion gate AS SOON AS YOU COME ACCROSS IT. I am now at a point in my game where I know I have found several oblivion gates (marked on my map) but they are still open... so now I am kind of lost.
At what level did you manage to join the Mage Guild?
I joined the mages guild at about level 16 or so. Or at least started getting all of my 'approvals' (or whatever they were) from all of the guild members at about that time. As you probably already know, doing that alone takes some time. I would get restless and do something else in the mean time. I think I levelled up a few times before I actually got all of my approvals.
One of my toons is a Theifmage kind of, Find it very hard to fight. The other is pure caster, and she rips through stuff like its no problem.
Mages seem to be the strongest character in this game (as most RPG games are). You sacrifice your ability to defend yourself for a powerful attacker. I am very happy with my character or "toon." I am a high elf (decent amount of magicka) and my birth sign is the warrior. I have became the arena champion mostly by killing people with my sword... so my swordsmanship is very powerful. On top of that, once you are in the mages guild, you can actually MAKE your own magic spells. You are also required to make a mages staff. Well, being I am pretty strong in destruction spells, I made my staff a destruction staff dealing 80 Cold damage each strike. I then created a very powerful "vulnerable to cold" spell.. now I can kill just about any enemy by casting that spell, then hitting them with the staff about 2 or 3 times... no one stands a chance.

At what level did you try and when did you finish the first Gate?
Go into the gates as you please. The enemies get stronger as you get levels. The gates are also good to enter because they hold magicial armor and weapons. Some are really easy some are like mazes. You do not have to kill everything in the gate but I do so I don't back into any enemies. A tip if you will, get the the top of the highest tower and grap the Sigel(sp?) stone and then the gate will close.
At what level did you manage to join the Mage Guild?
I joined all the guilds as I came a across them to have the quests. Just don't get caught stealing or killing anyone from that guild. if you join the thieves guild you can pay off your bounties if you murder/steal something. You can check your bounty by hitting 'tab' and clicking on your 'toons' stats. I'm sure you know this.
One of my toons is a Theifmage kind of, Find it very hard to fight. The other is pure caster, and she rips through stuff like its no problem.
I feel your pain here. Neb's toon would own through monsters and guards or whatnot. I was like how in the hell... But I'm a theif as well. I sneak around a lot. Get your sneak up, hide in the shadows, and use your bow. It's the best method untill you get some nice strong spells. After awhile you'll be able to shoot from the shadows and hit monsters and they won't even know where your at. It's funny because they'll walk right up to me and say 'It's must of been a rat'.. Then I'll pop them again.
Sorry for the delayed response. Any thing else feel free to ask. I only have one toon and I'm pretty satisfied with him. You can also get your block and blade skill up by just fighting enemies over and over. Sometimes it may take a minute or 2 to kill something off.
My 2 cents worth.

Ya I'm sure they made it so the enemies progress in levels as you do to keep the game from becoming a grind to get to that next level. Makes it more fun if you ask me but it also keeps the better equipment from being available until you are higher levels.

Ok,
The spell purchase problem was not a problem, seems it is a particular time that they sell.
I really like the way you can make your own class. Once you feel your way, and know what you like to do in the game, just set up the skills you like to use most as your mains. I can not beleive how much faster my second toon leveled. I will post up the skill definition in another thread. She has no blade skill as a main, its all casting :)
Not sure I like the adaptive environment. That means every time you go into a place it will be tough. I like to go back and clean up on the beginning stuff, in other games. I was kind of noticing how the game was getting tougher all the time. But with my Thief toon, I was always getting my ass kicked and using up every resource to stay alive every battle. Knowing about the conjered Pets now, I will be remaking that Thief.

All I can say is that, all other games will be compared to Oblivian. The graphics and interaction of the environment is beyond anything else I have seen.
Managed my first Mage guild reccomondation quest. I was sneeking when I found him and when I clicked on him, I pick pocketed him. He bitched about me stealling his cash. Soon as I was not sneeking, and clicked he was all happy to see me. Didnt know about pick pocket till then.
Anyone got a house yet? What do you have to do to get characters to talk to you about them?
