With the Core 2 Duo's chips smoking most benchmarks AND being exceptionally well-priced, all last week's chips are dropping through the floor. The top of the line Athlons were $1000 a couple of weeks ago. Now you can get them for under $350.
Even the mid-range Core 2's are smoking the top of the line Athlons and P4's. The worst that sites like HardOCP Intel-hating, AMD-sponsored can say is that the mid-range performs on-par with AMD's best.

So if having last week's best isn't an issue, they are a great bargain. If you think the low prices of a Core 2 are enticing for the huge performance gains, you'll probably also have to factor in a new mobo as well. Then again, when upgrading CPU's most people have to buy a new mobo as well so that may not be an issue.
