I can't figure out what the best way to go with my Paragon/Warrior.
If i equip him with a sword it makes it much easier to stay within range for my shouts and chants but it cuts the damage i can do in half.
If i use a spear i can do a reasonable amount of damage but the majority of the time my shouts and chants are useless because the melee players are too far away and the caster/healers spread out too much.
I'm really not sure what to do at this point.

I'm not sure how they're out of range. The range of a shout/chant/echo/aria/finale is the same as the aggro bubble. Also, spear range is never more than the aggro bubble from what I've seen so you should always be near your NPCs unless they're running from mobs. If you're playing with other players then you just have to ask them to stay closer so your skills will effect them.
Angel has a level 20 paragon/ranger and I have a level 12 Paragon/warrior. I know that she is using Apply Poison and focuses more on damage while I'm focusing more on Watch Yourself! and Shields Up! along with Mending Refrain and other echoes to keep my group in the fight. Angel has been playing more so I'll let her tell you what she knows.
How far along are you? Have you finished the Diggings missions yet?

Yeah, i'm done with the majority of the things in that area. I'm stuck at the raid mission at the consolate docks. I've been trying to beat it with my heros instead of grouping and it's not working out for me. The lvl24 Officer keeps kicking my ass. lol

Thunder's right, "within ear shot" is within your aggro bubble. You should never be out of range unless someone is running way out ahead like a silly nilly. If you're henchy-ing it, they'll hear you. I use the spear (am considering to changing to warrior, not sure yet) and Apply poison with a secondary ranger. With Anthem of Flame, the 3 adrenaline spear skill that causes bleeding, AND poison, it's absolutely crazy. I also use Aggressive refrain to make myself attack faster and Go for the Eyes! to critical more. Another ideay is to set your heroes to "Guard," they won't run out quite as far, and the healers and casters will stay near you. Henchies, well, you may just have to run a bit more forward to attack, but I haven't had to yet.

I didn't realize that chants and shouts reached that far. That's sweet.
I kicked the shit out of that lvl 24 today only to die 10 mins later at the next part. It's hard to get a group at that mission for some reason!

Hey, I was on...walked into the docks and you were standing there. I didn't realize you were on....I tried everything to get your attention, pm'd you, talked in the guild tab, jumped up and down and waved...I could have helped. :(

I usually try to play while my little one is in the bed for her nap...that's anywhere between 10:30 -- 2:30...whenever she decides it's naptime. :)
