Built on a foundation of pure fun, Nintendo's new Wii video game system sold through to more than 600,000 consumers in the Americas in just its first eight days of availability. That's a rate of nearly one per second continuously since the Nov. 19 launch. Including just first-party software and accessory sales, Wii instantly has become a $190 million business in the Americas.

During the Thanksgiving holiday shopping weekend, there was plenty of conversation across the nation about the high demand for the Wii system, with the acknowledgment that if you see one, you'd better buy it.

"Even with sales already in excess of 600,000 units, demand continues to exceed supply, as it's clear this is one of the 'gotta-have' products for the holiday season," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We've shipped retailers several times the amount of hardware the other company was able to deliver for its launch around the same time - and we still sold out. Given the inclusive nature of Wii game play, we're seeing this new form of video gaming is already a huge hit with gamers and newcomers alike. It continues to be a phenomenal launch."

The system also is succeeding in its stated mission of reinvigorating current players, while attracting new ones. Every Wii system includes the five-game Wii Sports software, which is the talk of the Internet, featuring countless reports on how previously devout non-gamers have suddenly been converted via the amazing new way games are experienced using the system's remarkable controller. At the same time, the masterful The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, a favorite of avid gamers, already has achieved sales of more than 454,000 units in the Americas, representing more than 75 percent of all hardware purchasers.

...Classic games also are proving to be a hit on Wii, which offers downloadable access to 20 years of the best of Nintendo, Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx16 hits via the system's Virtual Console feature.

That's pretty amazing that a Wii console is being sold every second. I'm happy for Nintendo because the video game industry has been getting way too conservative in what it will finance and support. Innovation and originality have been thrown to the wayside as publishers only stick to sure things. Nintendo's success (while premature) shows it still pays to be creative, and that's good for the consumer! Viva Nintendo!

Thanks for sharing that. I agree, what makes games fun is originality. I have felt that there has not been enough of that lately. I have not had this much fun playing a game console in about ten years. I thought it was because I had grown older and that my imagination was just not what it used to be. But, I have only played about three hours on my Wii (because of school/finals coming up) and it was great. I can’t wait to play more and see what else the games have to offer. I am happy so see them doing so well and I hope they continue to make this new product something great for the gaming world.

Something is drawing me to it, the damn thing better pay off....

I've got to say Wii was fun when I played it the other day though, very entertaining.

yeah, with the power the POS3 has, its going to run some very good looking games, i will eventually get one, and hide it in my room, not next to the nintendos, that's just bad karma and feng shui.

You'll wake up one morning to find a bloody glove next to the PS3 and the Wii in pieces.

Seperation would be best.

It's really a matter of the porn industry. Typically, whatever they adopt becomes the main stream format.

It'll probably go the way of the MiniDisk. They still have them, but really only hardcore Audio-philes use them.

i doubt sony would have put the blue ray in their shit if they didnt think it'd be the way of the future...

plus the quality is awesome.

Typically once the porn industry decides it's a quick and quiet death for any other medium competing. Beta, while still used to a great extent in television, is nearly non-exisitant in the consumer market. Laser discs didn't take off because no one wanted to have to load a record sized object everytime they wanted to watch a movie. Image what the rental shelves would look like right now if laser disc had taken off. I'm still now sure why mini discs never took off. They seem durable and able to hold the same amout of information as a normal DVD while providing excellent quality.

I see Blue Ray becoming the next big medium but I'd expect a name change before a true public saturation. We've become used to VHS, DVD and CD but BR just sounds weird to me.
