Yeah, it's making a lot of news, but it really looks worth it. Maybe they got this convergence thing right.
Click on the videos on the bottom right for quick flash demoes. It looks really sweet.

I like the way the ipod works and the UI seems to have quite a bit of thought put into it.
The Phone is sweet where it merges calls (conference/ hold/ voice mail features). I don't know how a touch screen will be for typing. I hate them and prefer buttons, but maybe they got that right.
The net stuf is sweet, but the text still looks to be too small to be worthwhile. Maps would be a very useful feature and a good blend of a phone's capabilities.
Judging from the person's hand in the pictures, it looks to have the same dimensions as a coke can viewed face-on. That's quite a bit larger than most phones, but smaller than most smart phones. About the size of an iPod maybe?
I'm on Verizon and wouldn't switch to cingular for the world, but this looks to be a positive direction for cells.

On a side note, if you watch the iPod video you can see how you scroll fast by "flicking" your finger. It looks like it works very well. I remember a few years ago when people started with mouse gestures and you'd "flick" the mouse to go back and forward in your browser. I thought the mouse gestures were retarded and couldn't believe people wasted time thinking of this crap.
Apparently someone found a very good use for it now. You just never can tell how these ideas will eventually be used.

yeah I read a little bit out this phone. It looks pretty damn sweet. How are they going to release it? Are they going to ship them to Verizon, Sprint, etc? Or I am having to buy it first then set it up for my wireless provider?

I have been told by my co-worker (who also works for Apple) that the new phones will be using Cingular as their wireless provider. (As Hae-Yu mentioned)
The phone will be able to do all kinds of cool things... wifi, mp3 player, and you can even run OSX on it if you want to.
Nuckin Futts if you ask me.

why dont you like cingular? I switched to them this summer from SPRINT (asshats all of them) and like cingular, you can change your plan ANYTIME you want without having to renew for 2 year, and the automaticaly credit your account for unused stuff, its nice to have a phone company not stealing money from me, and their 3g network is fast as crap for web browsing, and chekcin my email is just as fast if not faster as on my reg. pc. (treo 680)

In my area, Cingular isn't reliable with too many dropped calls and poor coverage. Verizon is very reliable here. I think where we live pretty much determines how happy we are with our providers and they do some areas better than others.
Everyone in the SW with Sprint (that I know) is unhappy with them. It seems they've fallen to the bottom of the pecking order.
But anyway, I look at that iPhone and how it's used. The Voicemail is the killer app for me. As it is, I have to wade through the idiotic 45 second Verizon
"You have four unheard messages. The following 4 messages have not been heard. First unheard message sent today at 3:30 pm" To listen to message #4 you have to fast forward through all the messages and delete repeatedly: 3,3,3,7, 3,3,7, 3,3,3,3,3,7. Then the stupid message - why are the first 2 sentences repetitive and does anyone know how to completey shut it off? Now they also have a recycle bin for messages so you have to go through the whole cycle again. Just delete it!!!! Does anyone know how to shut off Verizon's stupid voicemail recycle bin?

ive been with sprint for 3 years... after being with verizon for 2 and cingular for 1.... sprint to me has been the best to me for fewest dropped calls and fewer "can you hear me now"s....
cingular sucks in my opinion, or at least it did in the past... im indifferent about verizon... i just know that for me, sprint is reliable, but low on the accessories... the other two are the opposite.
i wonder how much cingular paid for the apple/cingular teamwork?

I have Verizon and had small issues here and there but nothing too extreme. I been with them for about 7 years. Since I kind of work in the 'country' and have to travel to BFE Verizon is the only that works around those areas so I'll never switch for now. I would love to get an iPhone tho.

Thats not telling me enough... what is it that you are hearing are the draw backs or 'con's of this phone?
The only thing I can think of the phone having issues with is the pretty touch-screen face. The face is probably made up of the same material as the front of the ipod is. In my opinion people arent going to be too happy in a month or two after sticking their iphone in their pockets along with their keys and maybe some loose change or something... and there is a big old scratch accross the what was once an oh-so-pretty face. Other than that, I think Apple knows what they are doing as far as user interface and whatnot. The phone will probably be a success... much like the ipod was.

I've been waiting for the iPhone since I got my Ipod 1.0 oh so many years ago. Now its here and I just bought a Zune for Xmas so I dont need a new mp3 player. At first I was about to flip a shit, thant I saw the capacity and laughed. I could fill the damn thing 5 times over with all the songs, pics and movies I have. I'll wait until the iPhone is 30 gigs+ then I'll get one.

yeah, 8 gigs? pssh.. wonder why they went with such a small capacity.. maybe because of all the other shit they crammed into it feature-wise... though im sure the market will want the larger capacity.. it would be nice to have a complete cell, pda, and mp3 player solution.

hasnt been mentioned, and that doesnt sound like Apple's style. They like to have control of all aspects of their hardware, so adding an SD slot wouldn't be something they would do..

I don't think 8 GB is too limited. With movies yes, music no. With 8GB, you can fit 1500 songs +/-. I don't need all of my music.
OTOH if anyone plans on buying movies from them, then that 8GB will go down awfully fast.

thats the whole point, i want ALLL music in ONE place
without having to ever worry about switching music out that's not on the ipod that I may want at any given random time.
They will eventually make them with big HD's, i just wish they would from the get go. Its all a ploy, u get all the crazies that need one NOW, then 2 years they increase the HD and the people who have already blown 550 dollars do it again for a slightly fancier and larger capacity item. $$$$$$$$ for APPLE, i still have a NON color screen, i have been tempted to get new ones, when the photo one came out and then the Video, but i have been waiting for the damn phone, and will still wait until their greedy asses increase the HD size!
