they both made it in on the first ballot.... mcgwire did not.

Ironic that on a day when Mark McGwire doesn't get in the Hall of Fame, Shawn Merriman makes the AP All-Pro Team. Nice double standard by the writers.

a couple of nicely written opinions....

McGwire belongs in the HOF. Who cares what happened in front of Congress? (As if Congress was the bastion of honor and integrity)

His numbers speak for themselves. For those that talk about "look how big he got" he hit 49 homers his rookie year. The power was ALREADY there.

More importantly, MARK HAS NEVER BEEN CAUGHT USING STEROIDS.

Until we can prove he did indeed take drugs, he should be judged on his accomplishments on the baseball field. I will not play a moralist, and vote against him, considering that was not a system that did anything to prohibit him or anyone from drug use.

Sure he belong's, until somebody can explain to me how 'ROIDS' can make you a better ballplayer there shouldn't be a problem putting him in.

Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? Heck didn't Ripken and Gwynn play in the same "tainted" era, why don't they have to prove they didn't use anything to enhance their performance?

1) he never did anything illegal (since not even steroids were illegal at the time)
2) of those we absolutley know used steroids (canseco, kaminiti, etc) none of them produced like mcgwire, so he must have been a good player
3) if we're talking about potential role models, the hall is full of people that wouldn't be considered "good" role models (ty cobb for example)
4) if you assume mcgqire took steroids (even though he was never caught or admitted to anything) then how can you assume that ANYONE coming out of that era is fully clean? also, pitchers could have been taking steroids too, which means their pitches could have been going faster, making them harder to hit, and mcgwire still hit over 550 home runs
bottom line: steroids or no, mark mcgwire was still one hell of a baseball player, changed every game when he was in the lineup, and baseball writers everywhere (even the ones condemning him now) hailed him as one of the people who saved baseball during the infamous single season home run chase, and since he DID NOT BREAK ANY RULES...

if mcgwire, bonds, sosa, palmiero, or canseco ever get in than the hall of fame has to put pete rose in.

No big Mac does not belong in the hall of fame. And he owes baseball fans and especially the Maris family an apology. He cheated and stole the title from Roger Maris and he should be ashamed. MLB needs to slam the door on these cheaters and get baseball back to a game that the fans would be proud of.

I see what Mark did as no worse than what other athletes have done. Tiger Woods had unnecessary surgery done on his eyes to make them better than 20/20. To me, surgery to improve performance is worse than taking natural steroids. But either is horrible for professional athletes and the kids who look up to them.

WHAT DO U GUYS THINK?

all I know is I think it would be right for McGwire to make it in the HOF. He deserves it.
