Ok so I have offically lost my mind but I'm so thrilled I could almost cream my pants!
Several weeks ago I purchased the Canon EOS 5D and 28-135mm IS USM 3.5-5.6 lens (with 2 batteries, a 4gig card and camera bag)
Within a week I was back in the store to purchase the 580EX external flash and for christmas I received a manfrotto tripod, monopod and tilt head. Mark was also sooooooo sweet and bought me the 16-35mm L USM wide angle lense that kicks complete ass!! esp. on the full frame body.
Last week I was in Best Buy minding my own business when I got to talking to Scot, the guy who sold me my camera and within 30 minutes I was walking out the door with the 100mm 2.8 macro USM lens. Although it was a spontaneous buy, I dont regret it at all. This lense is wondeful!!
So, I'm having an ok month and my telephoto itch is burning. I've been unable to sleep just thinking about what I want and when to get it.
Long story short.....I just took the plunge and ordered the 300mm 2.8 L IS USM with the 1.4x and 2X extenders. That will give me 3 lenses in one (300mm, 420mm and 600mm respectively).
While doing the research on the telephoto lens I was conviced to also purchase the 85mm 1.8 because the reviews were outstanding and I wanted a lens capable of acheiving great results in low light situations. This lense does the job exceptionally well and the price was right (relatively speaking).
With all this extra gear I had to purchase a new pack to carry it all in and while I was at it, I threw in a wireless shutter release and a carry strap for my tripod.
I am offically broke for the next 6 months and I need to see the insurance agent to get this bag insured, as its worth almost as much as my car. But I'm thrilled!!!
Mark thinks I'm crazy as a loon but he is happy that its just camera equipment that I'm strung out on and not crack cocain!

haha!
well bank of america flagged my account for fruad b/c of the insane amount of purchases i've recently made so my order didnt ship today :(
I called them and got it straight after answering a bazillion questions.
I also called amazon and begged for my order to still arrive on time. They contacted the shipping dept.
Wish me luck :)
Oh and the pics.....I will have some coming soon. Promise.
Was hoping to make it to the zoo on friday. But I need my order to arrive by Thursday. We'll see...
This pack fully loaded should weigh about 55 lbs
haha! maybe if I throw it on and hit my treadmill I can get a rock hard bod :p
either way, I'm in for a work out. This stuff is HEAVY!

Sammie, what's you thoughts on shooting RAW vs. Jpeg? I myself have tried shooting RAW, but I don't really see the advantage. If you have the in camera settings anywhere near what you need, then you can still get what you want in post processing, but I keep hearing all these donks screaming to shoot in RAW and do everything post process. What's your thoughts?

definately raw. although i must admit that i do take jpegs as well sometimes for convenience (no post processing and easier to deal with filing because they are viewable in my windows explorer as i move files to approriate folders).
however, that being said, raw files are far superior. they contain so much more information. and they allow you to post process the image without degrading the image with every adjustment. Also since there is more information contained in the raw file, you are more likely to save images that would other wise be trashed or would look much worse by trying to saving them as jpegs. The extra information allows for more exact results in post processing as well.
The draw backs of raw are:
1. larger images, less pics per gig of card memory
2. requires post processing
3. not as easy in file management (if someone has a solution here, please share)
4. longer write times to memory cards (this usually isnt an issue on DSLRs but its a huge issue on P&S cameras) I know my Nikon took forever to write a raw file to drive..just not worth it.
Some sports photgraphers, even using DSLRs, may still use jpegs b/c of the much faster write times but they need every second. I guess it depends on the application. but for almost all situations, even fast action raw is a better choice,
despite the "drawbacks". And IMHO its the superior image quality simply due to its lack of data loss). If you want a full file that isnt degraded by compression and further degraded if you do post processing (which you should in most cases regardless of file format), then raw is the only way to go
RAW FTW

The mighty beast has arrived!
This is my canon 5d with the 300mm and 2x extender next to my old Nikon (that I used to think was a pretty big camera. Now when I hold it, I'm afriad I'm going to crush it....its tiny!)

Size matters!
I am just starting to shoot in RAW on my nikon. I must say being able to adjust the white balance makes a huge difference. Enjoy it Sammie! I am gonna have to check it all out in October :D
Maybe bring mine and we can look at the size of our...cameras

I have one of the original telephoto lens with image stabilizing. If I remember correctly it is an 85 by 300 mm. My poor Canon SLR camera just collects dust. 35mm film is dead, so my camera is worthless even though I paid a fortune for it so long ago. sigh...

some of your older lenses might work with a DSLR. you just have to check the compatiblity and the IS and AF features may not function.
The cameras depreciate in value fast but the good lenses tend to hold their value so if you can find a DSLR camera body that is compatible with your lenses, it might be worth the investment

I actually feel like I'm carrying a gun when I walk around with it. Everyone stares and looks intimidated :p
