Being the forums are so lively, I'll make a post.
Vista comes out today.. Who's getting it? What are your thoughts? Comments?
Here's a funny comic a co-worker sent me yesterday. I find it appropriate.

I'm gonna give a little bit to see if some major fuckup comes out and to allow ATI to get their driver up to snuff, and then I'll take it for a test drive. I think the Aero shit looks pretty trick and I like the ability to jack a fast 2 gig usb key in and let it add to your available ram for a quick pick me up. I just built this computer and I really don't want to do a clean install and have to reinstall all of my apps and shit, but I know that would be the wise thing to do, we'll see on that, if I'm lazy that day, it'll be an upgrade, if not clean install. There's really no large compelling reason to upgrade other than my nerd desire to experience new shit, but hell, we're all gonna end up with it sooner or later, so why not sooner?

I am not going to untill I have no choice. I want to actually use my Comp, not test MS's new unoperating system.
I have a thought that MS is trying to purposely cause the PC to not be a gaming platform. This way making players want to get a consol.
I am sure some will have XP on thier machine for sometime to come, specially since you most likely do not have the power to run the OS. Funny thing is, that I thought an OS was supose to give you power, not use all you have just to flash some pritty shit on the screen.

Actually if anything, vista is more centered around gaming. With DirectX 10 coming out (which is supposed to be pretty awesome), games should look more realistic then ever. Look at crysis, I've never seen such awesome graphics in a game. Also, the gaming center thing allows you to organize the games and get all the ratings etc etc. I am not really sure how you think vista isn't game centered other than the fact that it takes a little more RAM, but if you turn off aero then you don't really notice it anyway. My friend is running vista on his POS $1200 dell laptop and it works fine. I'm not saying to go out and be a fan boy and buy it, but the OS is really nice and works well, and it doesn't crash!!! I think that a lot of people were expecting more out of it because of the long developer time, and I dont disagree, but it still has a lot of nice features. I'm going to get the business edition from work for free and then upgrade to ultimate ($140).

Vic,
All that I have heard and read sounds totally different from what you are saying.
Glitsy 3-D application selection is nice and all, but the performance of the OS compared to XP is a major dissapointment.
Im not sure about everyone else, but the 1G RAM used for the operating system is a bit over the top.
If the new operating system can not run the current applications better than the old operating system, how could it be considered better? This is stated in the latest news on the GNG front page.

1 gig of ram just for the OS??
that's insane.

I am not sure where you heard of 1GB for just the OS. I am running it on 4 computers in the office and it uses about 512MB with IE running. I know in beta 2/RC1 it was a huge memory hog, but RC2/release has seemed to fix a lot of it. I have read a lot about vista, both the goods and the bads, but I have been using it for almost 4 months now and I have had little to no problems with it. I run WoW on it with full settings on a P4 2.8, 9800 Pro and 1GB of RAM and it runs flawlessly. Also, like I stated, that with Aero turned off you will see a huge performance increase, and it's really not that necessary to have on unless you like pretty animations.
I think vista is getting a lot of bad rap just because it is Microsoft. I just bought a Macbook pro and run OS X on it, and it crashes more than my windows boxes ever did. Usually problems with the OS are more based on the user than the actual operating system (yes, i know you can come up with 100000 different reasons why that statement is wrong), but from what I have seen that is where most of the problems come from. Anyway, enough of me ranting.....
IMO Buy vista when SP1 comes out.

agreed with the purchase after SP1
The 1G of RAM is the recommended, not requirement, according to Microsoft themselves. So I have heard that figure as well. Which means it's even more of a resource hog than XP. And reading benchmarks of programs that are currently out it also appears that they run slightly slower on Vista compared to XP/2000.
I personally will never buy Vista, if it comes down to it I'll either get a Mac, or just won't play PC games anymore and move 100% to Linux and play on consoles. As it is now all I use my Windows 2000 box for is games. Everything else is done on this Linux box (which currently has an uptime of 146 days without a reboot , and that was only to add hardware). I've never bought a Windows OS and never plan to in the future.
And a warning for anyone who plans to get Vista, from what I understand, the upgrade version of Vista is truly an upgrade this time, meaning you can't do a fresh install with the disc like you could with their previous update discs, which were just the full install discs with different checks in them. So if you plan to go to Vista be aware that if you only have the upgrade copy of Vista, you'll have to reload 2000 or XP before you even install Vista, which makes system reloads a bigger pain in the ass.

I've heard that as well, but this might be a work around to that:
