Those who read my other article will know this was coming. It now appears in the latest update, the voluntary beta ads for the original CS are no longer so voluntary. The current maps affected are Dust2 and Aztec. The in-game advertising appears on the spectator bar, score board, and on various locations scattered throughout the maps.

It's now only a matter of time before it spreads into Valve's newer Source products. Kudos to these major publishers for their ingenious nickel and diming. We should all be thrilled with the direction this industry is taking.

Well, I for one find it unfortunate. However, I don't think gaming is something I'll ever give up because of advertisements. (not to imply that anyone has said so) As disappointing as it is, it shouldn't stand in the way of something that you really enjoy. It sucks, because the only way to ever escape forced advertising is to live naked in the forest on a deserted island.

It's really not "sticking it to the man" by choosing not to use products that have advertising built in. Sure they're getting a little extra out of the deal, but the only extra price we have to pay is consciously being aware that they're there, and ignoring them as so. I imagine that the businesses that will pay the money to have their logo painted on the wall on Dust2 will be fairly well known. Advertising in a game probably won't have any effect on their sales anyway. Also, with the backing of big business, the game content would theoretically get better, as well as the potential for lower costs to the consumer.

Yeah, we kinda beat this issue like a rented mule in that other thread. I will just say that I understand production costs to make modern games is getting higher, and that the traditional 50 bucks for a game may no longer apply. But me personally I would really rather pay the 5 or so additional bucks than deal with advertising. I really HATE advertising.

Yeah man, I agree completely. I guess all we can do is "hope" that our costs will come down. (as if it will ever happen:doubt:)

Advertising sucks esp. when your playing a game and like seeing pretty textures from your 300 dollar video card. and you got this UGLY ASS RAZER LOGO or an ugly CS_NATION Logo.
I think its bullshit they are doing it in the first place. Its suppose to be a FPS not a Billboard for companies.

I think the idea that they don't have enough money to make games based on a 50 dollars per game basis is bullshit. The gaming industry brings in more money then professional baseball (see THIS (http://www.thegng.org/forums/showthread.php?t=4506) thread, 8th paragraph). If they are gonna make ads big eye-sores in games.. the price for games should decrease. Fuckers.

This gave me a good chuckle. It's just a matter of time before they start incorporating Pepsi Co. and Starbucks advertisments in our playgrounds.

When I was taking my morning crap today, I picked up the latest Maxim (with teh super sexeh Aguilera on the cover oh yeah)...anyway, someone paid over $5.00 for that magazine. Less than 100 pages of readable content, and probably 100 pages of ads. Yet, people don't really bitch about that...and the thing is, there really is no difference. You don't care about the ads, but you still pay the price for the zine, and skip over them without ever noticing them unless it's hot chick.
