Here is the official review: first off i enjoyed the stylistics and the action. I am a guy its what i like. The plot is about as thin and crusty as one of my ass hairs. If you want to see some macho balls to the wall shit, then definitely go see this movie. If you are a stickler for noticing the details that everyone else misses, then expect to see what you always see. Other than that i loved every minute of it.

I honestly wasnt that impressed with this movie

The whole movie was like one giant battle.. which you think would be cool but sorely lacked any kind of story line. The fights WERE pretty bad ass though, and the special effects were pretty kick ass.... but it definitely left something to be desired (so the saying goes)

it gets a C from me

Well, considering the movie is based on that particular battle, well...I imagine there wouldn't be much content other than fijghting.

Watch the History Channels episode on the Battle of Thermopylae. It gives alot of insight in the leading up to the battle.

I haven't seen the movie, but I imagine that knowing a little more in detail, the history of the event, may help appreciate the movie?

I don't know...I never was much of a history person until recently. Most of you probably know more about this subject than I... I just half assed watched the show the other day.

I am pissed because I didnt want the movie to end, I wanted 5 more hrs of carnage!!! You all keep complaining about a storyline???

It was based off the historical event of 300 spartans defending the pass against the Persian Empire.....What storyline are you looking for??? They made the movie off of what history tells us how the battle happened.

The Greek army, led by King Leonidas of Sparta, was about ten thousand strong and in position at Thermopylae, when the Persians arrived. Xerxes was incredulous that they would take a stand against his immense army. After impatiently waiting four days while warning them to surrender, he launched a massive attack. The Greeks, as at the Battle of Marathon, initially retreated drawing the Persian army into the narrow pass. Then they turned and waged a furious battle against the limited number of Persian who had entered the pass, thoroughly routing them. Time and again the attacking Persians, including the elite immortals, were unable to get through.

Unfortunately, a Greek traitor named Ephialtes told Xerxes of an alternate route around the pass. He led a large part of the Persian army to attack the Greek forces from the rear. Leonidas learned of this treachery and decided to evacuate the Greek army while holding the pass with only three hundred other Spartans long enough for the army to make an organized retreat. The battle at Thermopylae ended with every last Spartan fighting until they were killed. This distraction gave enough time for the rest of the Greek army to retreat into southern Greece. Ephilates expected to be rewarded by the Persians but this came to nothing when they were defeated at the Battle of Salamis. He then fled to Thessaly with a bounty on his head. According to Herodotus he was killed for an apparently unrelated reason by Athenades of Trachis around 479 B.C.

There's your historical "storyline"

Is it more intense than the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan?

Thunder, I wouldn't say it is that intense. MF, I'd say knowing the history helps a lot. You've got all these details, but this helps put a little meat on the stories. For me, the almost charicatured characters are really symbolic of the respective sides. It emphasizes a young, vigorous, rising culture vs a decadent, ancient, despotic culture. I also like how people are taking out of the movie their own pro/anti-war readings too.

Even if it didn't match SPR, it is very intense. I'd agree with those who loved the movie on its own merits. A lot of historic details were glossed over - the Spartans DID use armor - for the sake of the film, but overall, it was very entertaining. The story was about a battle, the movie was about a battle.

The graphics are great, the look is great, the action is well-choreographed.

Some complain about dialogue - Spartans were from the area called Laconia where we get the word laconic. You aren't getting much dialogue from a movie based on Spartans!!

What I thought was the most realistic was that first combat. You see all the other fight scenes in the 45 minutes of trailers released, but I'm glad they held this one back. You have the 2 front lines meeting with a great deal of pushing shield on shield. All the soldiers behind them are pushing them forward. The 3rd and 4th ranks are stabbing the front ranks of the opposing side - hence the long spears instead of swords. That is completely different than a lot of films portray those ancient combats.

i thought the marketing scheme that the studio used was a little outrageous and made me as a potential viewer a little disgusted by how it was pushed upon me, but i still liked the movie.

How so? Did the teaser's show too much or not enough? Was the quality bad? I'd actually like to know since this is my field and I may have to start out doing teaser trailers. Was it just too much advertising?

the teaser, in my opinion, showed all of the good parts of the movie.

just watch the teaser about 30 times and you've seen the movie

i wasnt being sarcastic....

i was just merely pointing out that the advertising of 300 was way over the top... it was everywhere i looked.... online ads, tv and movie theaters for months before the movie came out, billboards, myspace, etc.

i just got tired of it.
