This is a link to an interesting article on CNN about virtual pawnshops being opened. The kick is that you can turn in your 'cyber' money for real money.
There is a growing trend of persistent virtual economies that are tied to real dollars. This blend of video games and business is not escaping the notice of corporate America. Corporations like IBM are taking an active part in theses ventures and has invested 100 millon dollars into Second Life and hired 200 programmers to create content there. A recent product launch of IBM's new hardware line took place inside Second Life at one of the many IBM Islands there.
In the above linked article, note the reference to the fellow in Eve Online who tried to make off with people's deposits after opening EVE's first bank. The first virtual bank embezzlement scandal!
