Microsoft has a viewer called HD View for free download that allows users to make their own Gigapixel images. It also breaks the images up into smaller jpegs, combines them into a massive web page panorama for easy web browsing. My work settings won't let me load the active X control but I've seen other gigapixel images (and posted a link somewhere on here before).
A Gigapixel image is a massive image composed of hundreds or thousands of smaller images. Sort of like panoramas on steroids.
