I think our server should run 2Fort or custom CTF maps more then anything else....how bout you guys? I just really enjoy that more then the capture point maps.

I don't really like the intel CTF maps. I much prefer the ones where red defends and blue has to cap all the points. The maps are boring and symmetrical, I can't stand that!
Valve only included one CTF map, 2Fort. I think this was intentional. I don't mind the CTF maps, but they get so old so quickly. I'm usually ready to go after a team caps the intel 2 or 3 times. All the other maps have a REAL objective and something happens when you accomplish that objective.
How is capping the intel not a real objective? :tongue:
I dont know I just cant stand some of the capture maps...I like some but when 4 rounds in a row end in 1 minute (or less) each...they get REALLY annoying....I like the cap maps that let you take the time to build up a decent defense though.

I'm not sure I like how CTF is in TF2, but it's something different after all the capture-the-point maps so I'm not complaining too much. I would prefer it not be put in rotation more than the other maps though.

All I have to say is that CTF_2Fort is pretty much the de_dust2 of Team Fortress maps.

It is. But after you do it once, it's just the same thing. With the other maps, sure, you might have to capture more than 1 point but the points at least look differently and there are different ways to do it. CTF just feels more like a deathmatch than anything else.

I feel the same way too. that amkes it way to easy for a team to play catch up on points and it ends all to quick(with the one to capture) there is really no time to build up a defense, unless you're playing with a group you know and play with well.
Ya there is only that one Capture map that does that...I do not know the name of it...but that is the one I really dislike.....the others give you a decent time to setup and such and are actually alot of fun.
Animal: I see what you mean....I just enjoy sitting there blowing people up and I have a perfect spot for a Sentry on 2fort so I love it. heh
If anything I would say take the capture map I am talking about (sorry I dont know the name) and either take it off rotation or make it not happen to often. Either way I will love playing on our own server.

2fort is gay.. it was fun the first few times i played it but now i just think its too easy...
capturing the intel is a good idea... alot of games use that type of map and it sells
So many 2fort haters....:doubt:
Seems like I may have to venture to other servers to get my fix sometimes :tongue:

I do agree but it also keeps the action going.
I am still pist they made well a point map....in TFC it used to be a CTF map and a fun one at that. Meh maybe I just love my CTF games....seems like EVERY fps coming out is using this damn capture the point system....it gets really old

Well what would be cool is a 2fort capture/defend. One side is offense and the other defends but still have to cature the intell, vice versa.
nice idea....would be a pretty sweet :smile:

The only thing that really sucks about the capture points is that if your team sucks.... you're basically fucked for the next (however long the map lasts).
At least with the intelligence, if you are good enough - you can at least have a fighting chance to sneak in behind enemy lines and retrieve the intelligence for your team (or lack there of).
Capture points are fun for the most part, dont get me wrong. But when the teams are all weighted against you, and you're the only one on your team who even knows where the capture points are........ it really sucks the fun out of the game
so CTF FTW
Either way I'm just glad we have our own server. Perhaps we can get a mod kind of like we had with CS where we could throw up a list of map choices and just let the people vote at the end of each map

Remember the partial downfall of our Source server.
I am partial responsible for that, but too many customs, wierd downloads, and not a good set rotation will drive off the pubs. Keep it simple and fun and slowly add in a custom or so a month.
We need to get our front pages back up with a downloads section that has map packs for people that play on the servers if we get customs.
ctf_turbine is the little intel map I added to the rotation.
I added another one too but it's not in rotation yet. It's stronghold_b5, I think it's a ctf map too, but it's much bigger. But it looks very well built, like professionally done. I haven't tried it out yet so we'll have to see how that one plays with a full server.
If anyone has any maps they want added just let me know and I'll get them on there quick as I can.
As far as weird downloads go, I don't plan on putting anything on this TF2 server for people to download besides maps. There's nothing I hate more than downloading 100 shitty sounds for someone's server that I don't want to hear anyway. I posted this elsewhere, but I'll post it again. There's a cvar you can set so you don't get all of those sounds from servers. It's cl_downloadfilter "nosounds". That will skip any sound files a server tries to make you download.
After we get a few more customs we can post up a map pack on the site, I hadn't thought of that. I have access to the site now so I could even do it myself if Animal doesn't have time for it.

Just want to point out the fact that our server was pretty much dead last night for a good 3 or so map rotations. There were about 4 GNG playing, and maybe 2 or 3 other people playing.. a pub would leave.. another would come on...
we switched to 2 fort and the server was full (or very close to) by the end of the map.
Again, take this as you will - but 2Fort is like the de_dust2 of Team fortress. You may hate it, but the pubs love it.

Last night Animal and I were watching the server when no GNG were on, and it was almost full. Then Turbine loaded and half the people left, then it trickled down from there. So for now I took Turbine out of the rotation. It's still on the server, and any admin can change to it, but the server won't change to it on it's own anymore. There's another map on the server you guys can try out, it's in the map menu. CTF_Stronghold, it looks really well done, kinda big so try it with a full server.

That map looks pretty wild. Defianly would suggest doing it with a near full server. Reminds me of the ole CTF days.
Well its been about a Month since that last posting... I don't know how things have been for you guys... but here's my 2cents.
I love the GNG server, and I only play on other servers if the GNG is full...
That being said, I don't play all that often, but when I do play I play for hours... enough to see the same map in the rotation over and over...
I definitely hope that they will make some official map packs, but for now, is there some "popular" un-official map packs floating around? you guys can list the d/l info or something on the server so ppl know where to d/l them at HTTP speeds..?
I like the oldies, but wouldn't mind something new...

The problem is I haven't found any decent maps yet that are worth putting into rotation. There are newer versions of the Turbine map that's on the server now, but the map isn't that great to begin with. And there's this castle CP map with stages like dustbowl that might be interesting.
Any maps added to the server will be compressed http downloads from our webserver, I hate waiting forever for downloads, so that's covered. If we get a few maps together we'll pack them up for direct download from the website also for anyone who wants to get them ahead of time.

Valve added a new server variable quite sometime ago which allows people to specify a webserver in order to serve up custom content. We take advantage of this and you will get quick downloads whether you go through our website or the server to get them since they both download from the same place.

I think it's a bad idea to add custom maps until they become regular on other servers as well. This is because no one likes gettin' smoked on a map they don't know at all. I mean I don't mind getting killed on a map I do know.....
Personally I think 2fort is an extremely frustrating map to play. Due to so many choke points in the bases its hard to do well on the map when the other team has good D in a pub environment (a little coordination at best). From the many games I've played of 2fort I tend to see one of two things happen:
1) One team doesn't commit a lot to D, and get stomped
2) Both teams stack D, no one makes any noteworthy progress into the base.
Now granted theres mechanics to prevent stacked D, but again in a pub environment its rare to coordinate a whole team to attack at the same time.
Thats why I really love dustbowl. The whole team is focusing on one thing (attack or defend) so you tend to see a little more teamwork naturally occurring. Because of this I tend to experence much more enjoyable games on that map (again in a pub environment).
But as you guys say, the numbers don't lie. People like 2fort and want to play it, so I say keep it in the rotation.
As far as custom maps, I've personally played stronghold a bunch, and it is indeed alot of fun to play with a full server. However at least in the version I played there was no visual guidance in the map on where the hell things are, so it was very confusing at first until I learned the layout of the map.
I really think custom maps are a good route to go, though. Even as fun as the stock maps are, sooner or later we will all burn out on them because of how few of them there are. Also, at least since I've been playing on the server I am seeing more and more regulars, who I'm sure wouldn't mind waiting a bit for a new map to try. Perhaps you guys could load the custom maps at 'prime time' when the most regulars play (not too sure but probably between 7-9 on weekdays).

I agree with Jeed as well as Tucket...
Anyone with a little leadership (ie. myself) who has voice chat can co-ordinate a 3 man strike and easily take the Intel in 2 maybe 3 lifes... This is a generalization of course as there have been a few times that my plans didn't workout as they totally stacked D.
My favorite thing in 2 fort that almost nobody utilizes is the Rocket / Grenade Jump that made 2fort what it is even back in the Quake days... sigh...
Anyways, As we all know 2fort on GNG #1 = death of server... but plenty of dedicated 24h 2fort servers do well with that map.
Personally, I like instant respawn or 1 second respawn on the 2fort map just because it is so hard to co-ordinate an offensive or defensive sometimes (as ppl... usually snipers just stand there as the intel goes right by them.)
I havn't tried many custom maps yet, but I do know some other servers are serving up some Custom maps. and think maybe eventually one server is set on regular rotation and the other set with a few customs or something... but I definitely would like to see more than the standard map rotation in the future regardless of which server it is on.

The map that always kills the server is well. Everything else seems to do alright.
I added a couple more maps to Server 1, but not into the rotation so an admin will have to change it.
I added version 3 of turbine, ctf_turbine_v3 which addressed some issues from the initial version I had loaded. Such as more cover in the center area, and a spawn you can't camp.
I added a new cp map called cp_science_b3 which looked pretty interesting and had decent reviews.
Both are also setup for http download so they should download pretty quickly. So try them out and let me know what you think. Maybe we can replace cp_well and/or granary with a custom map people actually want to play. :biggrin:
What do ppl think about battle creak? and are there any Quake CTF remakes?

I played a map on a Chicago server yesterday that was just terrible for the attackers. They had 4 second respawn for both teams which did not work. Even an uncoordinated defense could respawn enough to defend the one control point. I need to find the name of the map first.
I added a couple more custom maps to the server for you guys to test out.
First is cp_castle, a multi-stage cp map like dustbowl. I walked through this one a few weeks ago and it might work as a regular rotation map. The only issue I remember reading about was how it was possible to camp the defending teams spawn on I believe the last cp.
The other is cp_beach_b6. Haven't tried this one yet, but it has positive reviews, and I've seen other servers with it. Supposed to be pretty big too. And apparently point "C" can be somewhat confusing to find for new people to the map.
Let me know what you guys think when you get a chance to play them.
Ok, added another map for your testing pleasure, ctf_scorpion_v3. It got really good reviews, and seems to be built pretty well. I walked through this one and it definitely has some time put into it.
The intel is almost right outside of spawn, but you have to jump down a tunnel to get to it, so it's not too close. You can't take the same way out of the other team's spawn that you went in through. There's an interesting 1-way door that only lets you head toward the other team's base. You'll have to find another way back.
The Intel is behind a little door that opens when you stand on the button in front. There's a slight delay for the doors to open, which would keep people from just running by and stealing it. After you grab the intel there are some gates that open next to the 1-way doors towards the center of the map to make your escape through.
Let me know what you guys think about it, maybe it can be added to the rotation.
Looking at r3d's walkthrough of science I noticied there's a newer version of the map out. So, I added cp_science_b5 to Server 1. Looks like a fair number of changes between beta 3 and beta 5.
I also added a newer version of castle, cp_castle2. The scoring is changed on this version so it's like dustbowl is now, you get a point for each cp capped. I'll add a map config to set the scoring limit higher so it doesn't end so fast.
Added the newest version of castle, cp_castle3, after getting an email from the developer! Must've got my address from the server. It's supposed to fix a few bugs with the last version.
Added a new map, ctf_quarry, for everyone to try out.

Bring back cp_well. I get tired of dustbowl and turbine. Warpath always gets voted off, and I don't like hydro.
I added ctf_mach3 at tucket's request.
Has anyone tried out any of the other maps I added?

I've played most... whenever our server is empty i just go in search of new maps... nothing has caught my eye really
