The broadband market has slowed (http://www.thegng.org/shownews/Broadband-Industry-Slowing-89388) as providers have picked all the low hanging fruit (aka dial-up users who were slow to convert). Companies are now primarily focused on retaining existing customers by offering discounted bundles and signing users to long-term contracts. Still, many people remain on dial-up services because it works for what they need (basic e-mail). AT&T's solution for converting any remaining stragglers seems to be to raise the price of dial-up so it's more expensive than DSL. From a forum user post (http://www.thegng.org/forum/r19352739-Dial-Up-Price-Increase):So I got home today and found a letter from AT&T Yahoo Dial informing me that my service will be going from $9.99/month to $15.95/month come December 1st. Yes... a 60% increase in price! That's a dollar more than Basic DSL (which isn't available to me.) Can anyone in the know enlighten me as to why the drastic increase? I called the 866 number and was told that they are adding features and "value" to the service and as such, need to raise prices. It's dial-up for pete's sake. It doesn't get much better than 42.2k, regardless of these new "value added" features (read, more stuff to clog up an already slow homepage.)
The user says he'd switch, but DSL isn't available (http://www.thegng.org/forum/r19356048-).
