An article in today s New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/25/technology/25proto.html?ex=1353646800&en=1ede36007f8baff4&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink) provides an overview of the developments that have taken place in bringing the Internet to mobile phones. The author reports that the mobile web has a long way to go before a significant number of users will want to take advantage of it. Namely, he cites statistics that call 3G a failure and show that only a small percentage of people currently surf the web from their phones.

The suggestion is that to be effective and to see widespread use, the mobile web will have to differ significantly from the desktop experience. One difference being tested out by Zumobi is a series of tiles that can provide entry into certain points on the web. Another is testing to make the mobile web more voice-based rather that requiring the typing in of web addresses and other information. The argument is that we are going to see the web go mobile but that it will look different than what many expect to see.
