Online advertising is a huge and growing market with targeted advertising being one of the largest areas of growth. Changes may need to take place to some areas of this business approach as users across the nation and regulators in Europe both express concerns about privacy. The European Union has made a priority (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071123/wr_nm/internet_advertising_dc_2) out of the issue. Google s targeted ads are at the center of their review but all targeted advertising is being examined. "Online sites have to make sure they are not intruding people's privacy, otherwise targeted advertising will backfire," said Vincent Bonneau from French telecoms research group Idate.
Backfiring seems to be what s happened here in the U.S. (and elsewhere in the world) for Facebook users. They ve noticed that the site s new targeted marketing (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071121/ap_on_hi_te/facebook_ads;_ylt=Anlun4q_uaqYJORQJhXCc84jtBAF) publishes their purchases for friends on the site to see. This has caused privacy concerns as well as general disgruntlement that a user s preferences can be used to sell items to others on the site.
