FCC Chairman Kevin Martin s attempts (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/87462) to force cable companies to switch to an a la carte model of offering cable channels have been opposed by a number of groups including members of his own party (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/89617). The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/24/business/media/24nocera.html?_r=1&ref=media&oref=slogin) has an article today breaking down the reasons why a la carte cable is a bad idea for consumers. Calling it a be careful what you wish for situation, the author warns that a number of channels would end up going out of business which would offer consumers less programming options. Additionally, the article shows how prices on most people s cable bills would rise instead of decrease.
