How does the game generate a name for you as an opposing team member when you choose a disguise as a spy? Is it it completely random, or for instance if I'm a medic and I'm the only medic in the game, will an enemy spy who chooses to disguise himself as a medic have my name as well? I'm just curious because last night there was a medic spy that had my name, while I was a medic, and a few games before that I was a demo and ran into a demo spy with my name. Is it all just coincidence? If it isn't a coincidence and the game does take that into account what happens when you choose a sniper disguise but the enemy team has no sniper?

Thanks for any info.

The way a spy works is that the game will take the name of someone that is on the other team as the same class as you. If you are the only engineer, a spy as an engineer will have your name... if there are two engineers then the spy will have either of your names (totally random). If there is no one on the opposing team as that class, then you will just get a random name of a member on that team

I don't believe that's true. I was the only Eng on a team and I saw another Eng with a different name so I checked my team real quick to verify that I was the only Eng...and I was...so I shot the fucker!

I find that odd... the reason it picks a name from your team is so that something like that cannot be done. It could have been a weird instance... or when the spy went engineer you had a second one on your team that then swtiched classes

I was pretty sure that's how it worked most of the time also. It will pick the name of someone the same class you disguised yourself as if it can, otherwise it will be random. That's the way it seems to work most of the time anyway.

There are also other ways to get caught, and it's funny watching really bad spies do some of these things. Like picking Medic, which is dumb for at least 2 reasons. If you look at a normal Medic on your team you'll see the % of Uber they have under their name, a spy will just show the name. Plus the fact you can't heal anyone.

Scouts and Heavies are bad choices alot of times too because of the speed difference. If you see a fast Heavy or slow Scout then torch 'em. Disguising as a spy is bad too because everyone is just paranoid about spies anyway, so they'll check them just for looking like a spy.

Oh, and another thing, which may be recent, or I just noticed. If you're in a tight hallway, or just walking into someone, if it's a spy, or anyone from the opposing team for that matter, you'll run into them and stop. If they're on your team you have a much easier time going around. I've caught quite a few spies trying to slip past me like that before. It's like walking into a wall.

Lol, a medic spy can be dumb but I tell you one game I was half dead and saw a medic, I called his name and ran over to him... only to get knifed! It was pretty funny.

Thanks for the info.

I've found that spies in disguise have my own name displayed on their character when my cursor's on them...so it's pretty easy to figure out who doesn't belong.

Disgusing as a medic can actually be suprizingly effective actually.

The key with being a good spy is to take advantage of the chaos of battle. For example if you go in as a sniper and kinda sit there and look out during a lull you will be shot at just for the sake of checking. However when engies need to worry about keeping there turrets alive and demos are trying to keep enemies from peeking out and killing people you can honestly get away with any class choice.

Medic is actually one of the classes I disguise as most often. Sure if they are paying attention your cover is blown in two seconds, but when your pumped for battle and you see enemies coming around the corner I bet you will not check so readily.

Honestly I have a harder time getting good backstabs off than fooling people. Even the slightest lag effects how the attack works, I have seen the animation go off while I'm on top of someone only to have it miss completely. Another annoying factor is the two different attack animations. The true 'backstab' animation is far inferior to the regular slash in that it take at least another full second to land the attack.

As far as naming goes. I think it does tend to give you the name of someone who is that class. But perhaps if theres only one it may choose a random name just so it isn't so obvious.
