I've been playing TF2 semi-regularly for about a week now and I like it but I don't think my computer likes it. I have a fairly old comp right now and don't have the cash for a new one. I can possibly swing a new vid card after the hollidays but in the mean time I was wondering what in game settings I can turn down that will help the game run smoother for me? When I get into big battles or lots of traffic the game just goes to shit for me so I end up playing medic/engineer where I'm not always involved in all of the action.

I've also got an older computer with all TF2 graphical settings set to lowest. It actually doesn't look as bad as one might expect. Another thing I had to do was disable the custom wave bindings in Ventrilo, because every time someone would join the channel, my game would freeze up for 2 seconds. I've never seen you in Ventrilo so that doesn't apply to you, I guess, but it will if you ever decide to join us there. Typical other advice still goes: disable all non-needed programs running in the background, defrag, etc.

Make sure you're on the other team when I play, Farseeker. I totally promise not to take advantage of your situation in order to pad my kill:death ratio.

Honestly, I'm pretty much in the same boat on the more expansive maps. So I avoid the larger firefights and head around the edges looking for ways to break behind the enemy lines - so to speak. I recently changed the viewing angle too, and that has somehow helped out a whole lot. It doesn't look like you can use the same commands that we used in CS/DoD/etc to disable background sounds or excessive sprites...but I honestly haven't done that much research on it and don't really want to.

In conclusion, let me kill you a lot and maybe I'll buy you some better components. There's a 75% chance that I won't do that though. There's also a 65% chance that I just made that statistic up.

Console commands should be the same, or similar to Counter-Strike. Do a search for TF2 Performance tweaks or something.
