RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (Dec. 27) -- Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday by an attacker who shot her after a campaign rally and then blew himself up. Her death stoked new chaos across the nuclear-armed nation, an important U.S. ally in the war on terrorism.

At least 20 others were also killed in the attack on the rally for Jan. 8 parliamentary elections where the 54-year-old former prime minister had just spoken.

Her supporters erupted in anger and grief after her killing, attacking police and burning tires and election campaign posters in several cities. At the hospital where she died, some smashed glass and wailed, chanting slogans against President Pervez Musharraf. One person was killed in the violent aftermath of the assassination.

Musharraf blamed Islamic extremists for Bhutto's death and said he would redouble his efforts to fight them.

"This is the work of those terrorists with whom we are engaged in war," he said in a nationally televised speech. "I have been saying that the nation faces the greatest threats from these terrorists. ... We will not rest until we eliminate these terrorists and root them out."

In the U.S., a tense looking President Bush strongly condemned the attack "by murderous extremists who are trying to undermine Pakistan's democracy."

Musharraf convened an emergency meeting with his senior staff, where they were expected to discuss whether to postpone the elections, an official at the Interior Ministry said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks.

Nawaz Sharif, another former prime minister and opposition leader, said his party would boycott the elections.

The attacker struck just minutes after Bhutto addressed thousands of supporters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, 8 miles south of Islamabad. She was shot in the neck and chest by the attacker, who then blew himself up, said Rehman Malik, Bhutto's security adviser.

"She was inside the vehicle and was coming out from the gate after addressing the rally when some of the youths started chanting slogans in her favor. Then I saw a smiling Bhutto emerging from the vehicle's roof and responding to their slogans," he said. Then I saw a thin, young man jumping toward her vehicle from the back and opening fire. Moments later, I saw her speeding vehicle going away," he added.

Bhutto was rushed to the hospital and taken into emergency surgery. She died about an hour after the attack. Hours later, her body was carried out of the hospital in a plain wooden coffin by a crowd of supporters. Her body was expected to be transferred to an air base and brought to her hometown of Larkana. A doctor on the team that treated her said she had a bullet in the back of the neck that damaged her spinal cord before exiting from the side of her head. Another bullet pierced the back of her shoulder and came out through her chest.

She was given open heart massage, but the main cause of death was damage to her spinal cord, he said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. "At 6:16 p.m., she expired," said Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto's party who was at Rawalpindi General Hospital.

This sucks for the US government, but this kind of stuff has to happen. Its the eternal battle of Good vs Evil, if the Good Guys keep getting breaks, then the balance would be unstable and worse things would happen. Unforunately for us, the Bad Guys have their good luck sometimes too.:doubt:

no offense bizzle, but thats like saying OJ did it when the trials were going on, its a 50/50 chance.

(correct me if I am wrong, too drunk/lazy to research right now)

But she was the ex-something(president) of Pakistan( an already fucked up country with terrorist cells living on every street corner) and she supported the US more than the other leaders.

I would have a better chance of living if I ran through Harlem with a shaved head wearing a Swaskita T-shirt while carrying a noose and screaming kill all the nigger's(I dont like the word, but I need to make a point)

That's a screwed up situation. Bush critics kept arguing about supporting the Musharraf junta. She came back because Bush wanted to set up a semi-legit democratic "form" of government again to alleviate that criticism. Her death wasn't in their policy interests, Nimmie.

Rice had brokered a deal with Musharraf in a power-sharing agreement. Then the Pak Supreme Court stepped in and the whole thing fell apart. She tried to get something out of the scraps and the political manuevering started. If the Bush administration had let sleeping dogs lie, she would still be shopping on NY's 5th Avenue.

In Pakistan, like Mexico and most of the 3rd world, a few families control politics. Musharraf and Bhutto belong to those families. The most obvious killers are the ones who said they were going to kill her - Islamists.

People aren't getting it. They kept at it until they killed her (2 or 3 months?). They kept attacking Americans until they finally got 9/11 (the 1992 WTC bombing, Somalia, 2 embassies, Khobar towers, USS Cole, etc). They are still attacking Americans. They aren't going to back off until they are dead or they succeed.

I think the thought of a free democratic goverment isn't free but is the best alternative to a sex hungry religion-driven society which seems to be the middle east.... unless of course they are looking at us thinking the same thing. Which may be true, but still... they're evil.

And if you mail your " , " key to me roach along with a picture that tells me it is ACTUALLY gone, I will paypal you $10.00 american.

Edit: I also want your " ? " key. I will then send you a macintosh apple key to put in place of it.
