January's 700Mhz auction could lead to new broadband options. Sprint's Xohm service will introduce the public to 2-4Mbps wireless "device-agnostic" service without contracts or early termination fees. Even Verizon Wireless insists they're going to start changing their closed-network ways. The Chicago Tribune (http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-thu_outlook_telecomdec27,0,4599458.story?coll=chi-technologyreviews-utl) seems to think that things will get interesting for wireless broadband in 2008. "We see 2008 as the year where you start to forget about telecom infrastructure and begin to focus on applications," says Nortel Networks CTO John Roese. Of course this bubbly optimism appears every year around this time....
