In the format war between HD DVD and Blu-Ray, there s been an ongoing struggle by both sides to gain some ground. Back in August (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/86878), HD DVD got a boost when DreamWorks Animation and Paramount announced that they would be backing the format. However, things have now swung in favor of Blu-Ray with an announcement (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080104/ap_on_hi_te/dueling_dvd_formats) by Warner to go exclusive with the format.

Warner says that the decision was driven by a consumer preference for Blu-Ray. They note that they decided that it was time to act because many consumers were holding off on going with either player because they were waiting to see what the major studios were going to go with. The concern (http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/04/warner-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/) was that high-definition DVD might be passed by altogether if studios didn t start committing and move the market.

Warner will stop releasing all HD DVDs in May. In response to the news, an HD DVD promotional group issued a press release (http://technewssource.net/2008/01/04/hd-dvd-promotional-group-responds-to-warners-exclusive-blu-ray-decision/) saying that this leaves the ultimate decision in the hands of consumers and suggesting that the decision will sway in favor of HD DVD.
