Appomattox, Virginia is one of the first (http://www.redorbit.com/news/technology/1204229/new_internet_service_launched_by_bridgemaxx_in_app omattox/index.html?source=r_technology) small cities to start receiving broadband service from a WiMax-based system called BridgeMAXX (http://www.digitalbridgecommunications.com/tabid/77/Default.aspx). The service, operated by DigitalBridge Communications, is designed to offer low-cost indoor/outdoor high-speed connections to residents throughout the city. Appomattox was chosen as an area of deployment because of both the size of the city and the demand for broadband there. BridgeMAXX targets smaller cities which don t have many options for broadband service. The company hopes that the benefits of WiMax over Wi-Fi will give them an edge up even as other competition moves into these areas.
