Verizon techs tell us (and a Verizon press release (http://newscenter.verizon.com/press-releases/verizon/2008/verizon-delivers-new.html) confirms) that existing users can upgrade to the new, 7.1Mbps/768kbps DSL tier we've been telling you was coming since December (http://thegng.org/shownews/7Mbps-Verizon-Residential-DSL-90119). Verizon actually started offering the $47.99 a month tier in early December to new customers, but hadn't acknowledged it officially existed until today. Looks like there is a somewhat limited deployment footprint according to the statement:Consumers in some 400 communities across the nation now have a new broadband option from Verizon, as the company introduces an ultra-fast Verizon High Speed Internet service that more than doubles the download speed of its current fastest DSL offering and provides an exciting alternative to cable Internet.
Verizon doesn't list what those communities are, so you'll need to call in if interested. According to technicians we've spoken to, the new tier requires a loop length of 8,000 feet, and will cost you $39.99 if you're willing to sign a one year contract. It appears that the tier will cost you $47.99 (we're trying to confirm this with big red's PR team) if you go without a contract.

Verizon says they'll be expanding this tier into additional territories throughout 2008.
