Alcatel Lucent researchers have broken an optical transmission record by transmitting optical data at 16.4 Tbps (terabits per second) over 2,550 kilometers (aka 1500+ miles), according to Information Week (http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=206900603&cid=RSSfeed_IWK_Management). The goal is ultimately the creation of 100 Gbps Ethernet transmissions.
The gentlemen and ladies at Bell Labs used several new technologies to achieve the speeds, "including a highly linear, balanced optoelectronic photoreceiver and an ultra-compact, temperature-insensitive coherent mixer," the researchers said in a statement, right before smashing empty beer cans on their foreheads.
