this is basically just a rant, but I had to post it.
As you see from the title; I believe stupid people should not own computers. And I dont mean 'computer illiterate' ... I mean, stupid people.
For those of you who dont know, I am a Sys Admin, and at the moment, I am dealing with a Virus issue.... come to find out its not ONE virus issue... its more like 7 or 8.
I understand people get viruses ...but when you have new Virus Definitions being "pushed" to your computer VIA Windows Update, and you KNOW all you have to do to keep your computer virus free is just double click the globe... how is it possible to be infected with SEVERAL VIRUSES!?!? You almost have to be ingeniously retarded!
even more so, dont complain when I take you off the network because your machine is infecting everyone around you...
anyhow, /end of rant... just wanted to say stupid people should not own computers.

Who do you use for your Virus Scan?
A little off subject but about viruses...
I'm currently running McAfee on all my systems here, including servers. Except my UNIX and Linux systems, heh, they're not windows. I have a Windows 2000 Pro server running something called E-Policy Orchestrator, made by McAfee. So it's not the best thing but it does the job. It's the best on the Windows XP environment. It will target and find machines without a Virus Scan and install one. Also will keep all the machines up to date with the latest definition (What McAfee calls it) and import all the data into a MS SQL database (not mySQL tho :frown: ). With this you can pull up data on every machine on your network. To take it step farther, the newest version lets you install a Rogue Monitoring application on remote computers so they can send information about their subnets instead of one machine doing it all over limited connectivity. I also took it even farther and installed an application called Alert Manager (granted, these apps are all by McAfee), which this does is emails me as soon as it finds a virus or even spy ware. Stating what IP, computer name, if it could or couldn't delete the issue, etc. Completely customizable.
If you have McAfee I would defiantly look into this. I'm sure Symantec (Norton) has something like this.
.oO and I agree, stupid people should have access to computers. I like to call them 'tards'.

Tards it is...
and yes, I (we) use Symantec (Norton) Antivirus. Bascially the same kind of situation is being run over here as far as monitoring, updating, etc. With approx. 2,500 computers though, its hard to personally stay on top of all of these issues... I get notification from time to time that some one has not updated their definitions, and needs to before they are a serious threat to the network.
In these situations I will make a personal point to look at these machines myself (I am only responsible for about 75 of them) and update them accordingly.. however, in situations like these... this is not some one I -directly- support, they are not part of my organization.. but being that they reside in the same 3-story; 907,425,910,391 room building I support, they wanted me to 'check it out'
I am like a sys admin with my hands tied behind my back.. I dont really have any say as to how the Virus issues are handled.. I can only make suggestions.

Yeah, I hearthat. Sucks tho. With this system users don't even touch the virus scan. It does it all behind the scenes and always up to date. I'm in control of 250 computers and I have complete control of them and my servers here. I believe that is the only way. Both sys admin and network admins should work hand and hand. But it doesn't seem to go that way much. I do both and get paid ------- dick.
You could suggest it I guess, if they want to listen. Network admins are to themselves. I'm going to do it my way and with my choosen software and that is ------- it!!! lol

Just about
We should pwn their newb asses
I use to be a little 'computer hax0r' myself when I was younger... however, I didnt sit around and do st00pid sh1T like write viruses to infect random peoples computers...
Now I have to work overtime to clean approx 150 machines.
this is a shout out to the people who make viruses....

I'll second that shout out.
Overtime is good tho. money money moooooooneey! :surprised
But I must say using that ePO I have had no virus break outs here in the last year of using this. I have a whole separate system filtering the emails coming in since we have our own email server, which I know you do as well. It's acting like a gateway but it's invisible to the world.

Soi true...so true
BTW...I hate Dell, and I am allowed to say that after changing over a hundred motherboards out because of their manufacturing error ( and they still wont admit it's a problem)!!!

Wow, really? I just switched to Dell like a year and a half ago. I have had 2 motherboards fail and 1 harddrive go (out of 175 pcs) but we have gold support so they come out and fix. Of course when I call and they won't just send me the part, etc, I tend to raise my voice and.... get bitchy with them. Seems to work everytime. I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 from them for personal use. I broke my keyboard and they wanted me to ship the whole thing to them I was like 'hell no'. After trading some words and requesting a manager they just sent me the new keyboard and I replaced it myself. Haven't had to many problems with them, yet!
