IBM has announced (http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=206901114&cid=RSSfeed_IWK_Internet) the development of a technology that they ve dubbed green optical link which is designed to bring eco-friendly design to high speed networking. "The technology that IBM's developing uses photons of light, instead of electrons, to transmit information. That, the company says, promises networks in which 8 trillion bits of information could be transferred in a second using power equivalent to that required by a single, 100-watt bulb. That's about 1% of the power that's needed by today's standard electrical interconnects."
This technology is being advertised as a future alternative to DVDs with reporters noting that it would allow for rapid Internet downloads of movies and other media entertainment.

Researchers with concerns about the environment point out (http://www.physorg.com/news123432868.html) that this is an innovative aspect of green computing which could significantly reduce the damage being done by supercomputers today. Moreover it has implications that extend far beyond entertainment value such as enhancing medical technologies that require extensive computer downloads.

IBM has created their own optically-enabled circuit boards (dubbed optocards) that allow a large number of high speed channels to be packed into a small space. It is believed that the chipsets could be on the market in less than two years.
