Senator Mark Pryor has had a lot to say in opposition to FCC Chief Kevin Martin. Recently, he spoke against the way that the 700 MHz auction has been handled under Martin s direction. Opposed to the secrecy behind the bidding, he expressed the view that Martin carries an agenda into their agenda in assisting big business in beating out smaller competition. " History will show that the way the FCC structured the auction basically helped the two big wireless companies Verizon Communications and AT&T to the detriment of competition in this country, he added. "
Another major concern (http://www.gcn.com/online/vol1_no1/45904-1.html) about the spectrum auction has been the fact that the goal to use the auction to develop a public safety broadband network is not going to be met. There are some who say that the building of a public network shouldn t be left to commercial developers anyway and that the government should take it upon themselves to build out the network. Perhaps that s one use for the nearly $20 billion that has been gained from the auction. The FCC has increased the pace (http://www.rcrnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080229/FREE/92860007/1005/700MHzmain) of the auction in the hopes that it will come to a close in the upcoming week.
