After Earthlink pulled out (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/90169) of its agreement to build a citywide wireless network in Houston, the city could have become overwhelmed by the idea of trying to move forward with a new plan. However, they opted to just keep pushing through with the development of a network designed to bring Wi-Fi connectivity to everyone within a large geographical area.

Houston s first step was to use money gained from Earthlink s delay to establish hot spots (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/90090) throughout the city as a way to bridge the digital divide and connect certain populations to the Internet. The city has now requested (http://www.muniwireless.com/applications/digital-inclusion/2008/02/27/muni-wi-fi-returns-to-houston/) new proposals for new companies interested in replacing Earthlink in building out the full citywide network. Their hope is to extend their hot spot design and incorporate the rest of the city in order to compete with the top municipal broadband markets in the nation.
