The FCC s 700 MHz auction (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Senator-Says-FCC-Auction-Hinders-Competition-92294) may be getting all of the media attention but it s not the only auction happening around the world. Italy just finished auctioning off 35 licenses for WiMax 3.5GHz radio frequencies. At the end of the auction, the amount of money gained (over $200 million USD) was a record breaker for European WiMax auctions. The auction is intended to combat the digital divide in Italy and encourage the entry of smaller companies into the telecom market by bringing broadband to rural areas. WiMax technology should be able to bring 3-5 Mbps download speeds to these areas. Approximately 8% of the Italian population is unable to access broadband speeds at this time.
