When did you start playing Counter-Strike?

I'm looking for honest answers, I'm just curious what kind of experience we have going on here.

Personally, I've been playing since Beta 3. Yes, gun running was around then and the M4 was scoped and did not have a silencer. I was in my Sophomore or Junior year of high school and a friend got me into it. We used Gamespy to find servers. Valve used WON back then. The most popular maps were siege, assault, and militia. I played on dial up back then (like most people) and every couple of days we would see someone with broadband and a sub 100 ping. I've seen the average ping in servers drop from about 300ish to 70 or so.

I miss the old days. It seems like the only people playing now are punk ass kids who don't even know how to wipe their own asses. /sigh

I was first exposed to cs in beta 1
a good friend of mine got hooked and got a bunch of my friends playing, including mark.
we had a server. a free server. the guy who got my buddy hooked worked at a provider and hosted a box at his office......ah the good old days.

i didnt play til prolly beta 5 or so and then only every once and a while, b/c we only had one computer. we did have broad band thu. cs is the reason we got it. the guy who got us started, helstrm, was running a dsl line and so were the peeps we were playing with so we had to upgrade to play with the competition.
i really got into cs with the last beta run.
I got tired of looking at the back of mark's head and I enjoyed the game so i bought a second rig so i could join in on the action.
we bought 2 more rigs about 18-24 months ago, mostly b/c we wanted another up grade but its nice to have 2 extra game ready machines for peeps to play on when they come over to smoke and have a beer...or 6.

I hope soon i can afford to buy some new set ups for mark and i.
we're running 2.6's with a gig of ddr 400 mhz ram and 256 msi geforce fx 5600's
but i'd love to upgrade to a board that could hold 2-3 gigs of ram, a 3.5+ processor and a vid card...not sure which yet. all this talk of duel vid cards and the new pci cards would prolly have an influence on my mobo as well.
oh well, no need to dream now. i need the cash first.
then i'll build a nice machine.....that will be our dated in 18 months / sigh

the same person that got sammies gang hooked also put the bug in me. started on a 233 mhz on dial up in 1.3 that lead me to a 8 comp network in my house with7 of them loaded with 1.6 and souce on mine. need more cd keys lol. the bug hit hard . i now play on a xp 2800 with a gig of ddr and a 128 meg video card.

we started on a 486 then upgraded to a 133 then a 333.....166 then a 650 then an 800 finally a 1 g, then a 1.2 g....a 1.3g....a 1.4.............1.6....1.9...finally to the 2.6
I dont even want to list the vid cards.......10 maybe?

haha! we used to upgrade at least every 6 months. helstrm was always upgrading his rig and building machines for other people and he used to kick us down processors all the time.

I got into it about four years ago, actually Ranma introduced me to it, but I only played during the summer cause I used to only play at my dads. I'm guessing it was either 1.4 or 1.5 when I started but I'm only in 1.6 right now, got to get a graphics card so I can play source instead of single player H2, if I try to play it I just lag out the server lol. Even though I've only played 4 yr.s I know what little bitches are like, they always get on my friends servers thinking he can hack on it, it sucks. Dude I wish the M4 still had a damn scope that would be so awsome, really dude. It should be like something you buy if you have the M4 for like $1,000 or summin, that'd be tight.

i started w/ helstrm as an admin, server administrator. one of our regulars pointed me to the gng server. i liked the servers and the lack of responsiblity i had playing somewhere where no one knew your name. no one asking you to ban so and so or why so and so was banned. change the map. so and so is hacking.....bah, on and on
so i started playing at gng more. the peeps on the forums kept me coming back. definately a great group of peeps and a sick twisted sense of humor which appeals to me.....b/c im sick and twisted, :p

its been almost 2 years now I believe... I dont recall exactly what version it was that I started out on. SNK was the one who got me in to playing this game.. and as far as I remember it was probably V. 1.3? 1.4?... all I remember was it was a few updates short of when STEAM took over at 1.6.... soo, I wouldnt say my "skills" are veterain, but... I have been around for what now seems to be a pretty long time..

Well.....I started playing this game before Beta 1. I think it was called .05 or something...It was about a few days old when I discovered it. Then I found the GNG server....started playing there and was recruited by Laughriot. There was a big dispute about that because I think Laughriot didn't have the authority to recruit but he thought he did and Sputnik didn't want me in the clan.
Anyway things were smoothed out and I got into GNG. We played all the time and since Laughriot had admin over the server he used to fuck with the gravity and all sorts of shit all the time! I remember he used to put the gravity to zero and then when everybody was at a decent height he would turn the gravity back on and we would all fall to our deaths!

We were actually taking a break from starcraft after Berz fell asleep during the game and didn't fire the ION cannon. I think it was beta 2ish, I know at least beta 3... updates use to come a lot more often so not sure.

I remember when it first came out.. but I thought Quake was so much better at the time so it took a while to switch to CS. Granted Quake 1 still owns all.

I miss the scope on the M4... granted it didnt zoom in that far.. but was still nice.

I started playing a while ago, back when I used to go to a internet cafe like place with a few friends to play. I used to play the first CS (how the hell do you know what beta you played and all that, doesnt that seem a bit insignificant?) with a few friends, while we played Half-Life deathmatch. Whats the name of that map where you activate the nuke and you all have to rush to the shelter or you die? I had this need trick where I could blow myself up into the air and survive the explosion, but it was hard to do.

one day, or several days... everything will be great ping, no problems... then I'll get on later on that day, and my average is around 130 or so... it has even shot up to the 300+ ... I am almost POSITIVE it has to do with my neighbors, because I dont have to do a thing to fix the problem, and it seems to resolve itself when people arent usually on. (IE.. during normal work hours, or late at night)

Just buy another router... try that. have you reset yours in awhile? Modem as well?

yes, resetting the modem seems to have SOME impact, but, again... it fluctuates... it could just be completely ironic things clear up for a bit after I reset the modem. but within 5 minutes, things usually go back to how they were.

I have taken the hub/router completely out of the equasion with no change, I took my CAT-5 cable and directly connected it to the back of the modem, to my machine.. and no difference.

My situation could also be unique... one time (about a year ago, or less) some animal got under our house and completely (for god knows what reason) chewed through the COAX cable running to the house, completely cutting off our internet... so, I am almost under the impression something like that has happened again. HOWEVER, that doesnt explain why its great sometimes, and crappy other. I would figure it would be a constant issue, rather than fluctuating.

The only thing that I really loved about VIP maps was in the old days when Chick and I would play Oilrig. We would always be on CT.

around 2000 or sometime like that. MF and myself started about the same time playing at cafe electra. it had a t-1 line and we have free comp time because we worked there. it was great, it was fun, it was nothing like now.

btw. i still play 1.6 every now and again on a lan server. i am not a big fan of source and haxzorz. its amazing how much better a player you are when you are on a controled lan.
