The FBI yesterday continued their push (http://www.news.com/8301-13578_3-9926803-38.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20) for a law that would force ISPs to retain customer records for a minimum of two years, an effort that had waned slightly after the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales last year. Most ISPs currently preserve data up to 90 days if prompted by an investigator, but discard most user activity logs (unless they sell it (http://www.thegng.org/shownews/82908), of course). The FBI also spent yesterday insisting they wanted broader surveillance powers (http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9926899-7.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20) for all Internet traffic (see transcript (http://www.news.com/8301-13578_3-9927552-38.html)), and the ability to monitor the Internet for "illegal activity" (so far not fully defined).
