A HSDPA-supported version of the iPhone is set to be released on June 9 (http://news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/20080424/tc_pcworld/145082), falling in line with earlier predictions that the second incarnation of the phone would hit store shelves within months. Previous rumors (http://www.thegng.org/shownews/93469) suggest that the new version should come in 8 ($399), 16 ($499) and 32GB ($599) flavors, and should be slightly thinner than existing models. Meanwhile, one analyst notes that the EDGE version of the iPhone has already "strained" AT&T's wireless network (http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/04/24/analyst-apples-iphone-a-bandwidth-hog/):Our sources indicate that the success of iPhone with its Safari web browser is putting strain on AT&T s (T) EDGE network in areas with higher user density. We have been told that iPhone users are consuming well over 100 MB per month (compared to Blackberry around 10 MB). The relative economics to the carrier is unfavorable with actually lower net revenue while using considerably more network resources. To us, lower economic returns to carriers will mean lower subsidies relative to other platforms. This will put more of a cost burden on the consumer. We believe many consumers will pay up for AAPL products, but this could limit the elasticity of adoption somewhat.
Jobs is expected to announce the the even hungrier version during his keynote at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/).
