Despite a recent injunction (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/92897) on the import of certain chips related to last year s patent infringement lawsuits with Broadcom, Qualcomm is a company which is currently doing well for itself. The company has reported an increase of over 5% (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=aHlkynRWjr2E&refer=us) on the demand for their phone chips and reports (http://rcrnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080426/SUB/420556054/1003) that they ve raised their 2008 fiscal projections as a result. The report caused stocks to go up and the hope is that the revenue will continue to follow.
One of the things the company is planning to do with its newfound money is to enter the bidding (http://www.rcrnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080425/FREE/490067629/1019/rss01) for L-Band Spectrum in the United Kingdom. Qualcomm has been quick to announce that they re not seeking to become a UK operator and are only planning to use the spectrum for research purposes. However, the L-Band (which could be used for a variety of purposes including satellite digital radio operation and broadband Internet) supports Qualcomm s own MediaFLO mobile TV technology. Currently MediaFLO is involved in European trials but the European Commission is pushing for standard adoption of an alternative technology (DVB-H) instead. With the large potential market for mobile TV in Europe, it would make sense that Qualcomm would want to further the opportunities for this type of business.
