Yikes spelling error in title sorry

So a friend of mine is moving to the Keys and she is having a tattoo party (which is bringing in a tat artist that does outstanding work) in a couple of weeks.
I'm going to get a tat but I've been having a really hard time deciding on what. I know I want a black tat and I'm not interested in color.
I had considered getting om mani pa me hung or perhaps a double dorje (buddhist tat) but I'm thinking of switching gears a bit.

I'm now thinking more barcode style (but not just a barcode b/c that's so over done)...I was thinking of getting my social security number tattoed on me and a patent and copy right date.
I would love to have the social security number done the way they marked jews in concentration camps but I believe that was on the wrist and I cant place it there b/c of my job. It has to be some where discreet.
Perhaps somewhere on my back.

Thoughts...ideas?

Here's the myspace link for the artist

If it's not for a few weeks you should get on vent or call Angel if this is your first tat, she's got alot of good ideas for tatoos and you may convince her to finally get the last one she wants.

Just make sure not to get a tramp stamp.

Don't think you have to get a tattoo just because everyone else is getting one at the same time. Rather, spend a couple weeks creating your own unique design and present it to the artist for his/her interpretation. Then work with him/her for a couple weeks till you both come out with a product that you feel comfortable wearing the rest of your life.

I have quite a few large pieces now, and I've never once felt like they don't belong on my body. Tattooing is a wonderful medium, but it's being overrun by people who walk into a shop, look around for two minutes and end up getting a butterfly on their shoulder blade or some "Chinese characters" that mean "strength" on their back (read: 90% of the time the characters are not actual Asian letters, words, etc, and if they are, what you think they mean and what they actually represent are usually completely different). What I'm trying to say is think about what you want for a good long while. Don't get a tattoo just to get a tattoo and don't make any hasty decisions or be group-thinked into putting something crappy in your skin. Get something that you genuinely want to look at in the mirror and will be fascinated by till the day you die.

All tattoo artists' are not created equal. I've had most of mine done by hacks who just do color by numbers shit. The one true artist I have met is named Jon Zig. http://www.skingravertattoo.com/skingraving.aspx I've got one tat by Jon on my calf, and my brother has a ton of sick shit that he's done.

Arm bands and tramp stamps are way fucking overdone. If you cant come up with something meaningful to you and original,,,,,then don't do it. I think in your case a tribute to Karl Heinrich Marx might be in order.............

thanks for the feedback. i dont want to jump into anything thing and I do like a lot of designs for the sake of beauty but 3 ave's would be the ony way i would consider (for my own personal enjoyment)
something representing that which is intellectually profound/perplexing
or something equally true but bluntly obvious and absurd such as my social security number (my genome code would a better choice but Idont know what it is).
The thrid is my love of skulls and Dali

I think dali's interpretation of the skull would make a beatufil tat

http://www.planetperplex.com/img/dali_7women.jpg

roacha, my ss# and copy right would be a nice shout out to by marxist leanings

still pondering........

im not concerned about label regarding where i chose to place it.

i shaved my head bald that's just one example of how little i care about what or who labels me.
viva la resistence!!

from what you're explaining sammie, it sounds like the tattoo you are looking to get would be nicely placed somewhere on either one of your shoulders... for some reason I'm leaning more towards the right side than the left.. maybe right around the shoulder blade area.. or a little higher

Also, another good placement idea would be underneath the shoulder blade in a verticle fashion... and a little to the right. Kind of behind where your arm meets your side, but a little more in towards the middle of your back. Of course such a design would have to be rectangular shaped (more tall than wide) or perhaps your idea can simply be turned sideways and placed there as well.

To me, its not always so much the design of the tattoo that matters.. but the placement.

just my 2 cents

Sammie
04-28-2008, 06:13 PM
yea placement is a huge dilema for me since I work a job that would require that it not be shown. I have considered the upper should area or mid back but I'm concerned about evening events where I would need to wear a cocktail type dress.
I dont have to go to a ton of events like that but I do have to attend them from time to time.

While your heads shaved tattoo "Fuck Authority" on top of your scull, when your hair grows out it'll be your little secret...........OR,,,,,,,,,this would look nice........

I agree with cold, take your time. I got a dragon on my ankle, and while I love the dragon I regret the color scheme. I'd like to get it redone.

Keep in mind if you tat your actual social security number on yourself visibly, you will run into the one crazy freak that is psycho enough to steal your identity with it. Get something you want to look at forever, because that's how long it'll be there...

Sammie
04-28-2008, 10:00 PM
LaRoacha I have actually been playing with the idea of a tat on my skull.

I wouldnt put anything on me that is visable.

I like the copy right/patent idea and I think its something I could live with. But I'm not dead set on anything in particular yet.

Thanks for the feedback guys...keep it coming :D

im inked

I'll post some pics later

I did a rib piece and a tramp stamp

rib piece first which everyone including the tat artist insisted would be the most painful place and that i would probably have to ask him to stop several times through b/c of the pain

ah! I'm a tropper. I almost fell asleep while he was doing it. It wasnt bad at all so I went ahead and did the 2nd piece afterwards which supposively is the second most painful place to do it.....didnt hurt at all.

Cant wait to show em off to ya.

I didnt get the dali skull btw

How are your colors holding up on yours?

I'm finally peeling and the color is just slightly less velvet red than the pics above.

The color held up pretty well, the blues are a bit more muted than I had hoped but since it has been healed for a long while the colors are going to naturally fade out a bit. I heard blues do not hold up well over time so its no biggie I expected it. I will take a pic soon and post it in here so you can see the difference.

What did the guy tell you to use on it while it heals? As long as you take care of it your color will hold up great! I used lubriderm for a week or so to help it heal and keep it from scabbing....after that I went for a good scentless WATER based moisturizer.

Just try not to let it get dry and scabby

I heard the ribs are a painful spot to get some work done.....but then again it bothers people in different ways....

The worst pain for me was the day he finished it, not even while getting the tattoo but after I left the shop. He went over EVERYTHING again and then did all the rest of the work. The spots that were still tender from a month before felt like someone had a blowtorch on my arm for the rest of the night.

Sammie
05-15-2008, 03:30 PM
I used a total skin care nuetragena (spelling) for the first few days. I showed it to him and he ok'ed it.
It burned like hell.
On day 3 I switched it up to bacatracin which is petrolum based and didnt hurt.
It was hard to tell if I scabbed b/c of the color being deep red but the skin did raise and then peeled.

Lets see, I had it done saturday and it started peeling yesterday and is almost completely peeled today.

I'm going to switch to a water based lotion tomorrow.

The color didnt change much but its just a hair more faint than the pics.

My friend who did the party and has a lot of tats assured me that it was normal and that everything looked fine b/c I started to freak a bit when it started to peel.

I didnt mess with it, I just let it roll off as I washed it.

I agree, the next couple of days were worse than actually getting the tattoo imo.

My back never hurt but my ribs certainly did.

And I kept rolling over on my side, like IO mentioned, in my sleep only to wake up and realize...oh no....cant sleep on that side.

Angel
05-15-2008, 04:50 PM
A&D ointment is also a great choice. It's very easy to spread, melts like an oil, and doesn't sting. That's what I used.

I'm going back june 2 to get my dragon on my ankle reworked. I'll really try not to kick the guy, honest...

Snk
05-15-2008, 08:18 PM
Ya its gonna be faint for a few weeks then it will get better. I freaked out about a week after my final visit when I was washing it and a whole brown layer of skin (the entire body of the windmill) washed off...it was odd seeing a huge piece of skin just come off when I gently ran water over it

Glad to hear your suffering is close to an end you should post more pics after it is healed. I read some of the link to the meaning and that is a really cool tattoo idea...I love how it looks and the red is just awesome...great choice

Be careful cause it is just another addiction...your making me want to get some more work done

Angel no kicking! :)

ColdColors

very cool tats! your skin tone makes the color very vibrant, and the design on your ribs is very well thought out. nice job!!

Sammie, the majority of artists will tell you to wrap the tattoo for the first night in saran wrap, then wash it gently with warm water/soap, then wrap it up again in saran wrap. keep it wrapped/washed for three days. this makes sleeping with it MUCH easier, and you won't get lint or any other crap in your tattoo while moving around. you do sweat a lot though, so I usually rinse it three times a day with water/soap.

after that, no antibiotics, just non-petroleum-based moisturizer (after the third day, you want the tat to be able to breathe...petroleum suffocates the skin and poses the risk of an allergic reaction).

for those of you who didnt have time to read all the links here is a basic snapshot of the meaning behind the tattoo's symbols

Om = generosity which purifies pride (samsaric god realms of rebirth)
Ma= pure ethics which purifies jealousy and lust to be entertained ( samsaric jealous god rebirth)
Ni= tolerance and patience which purifies passion and desire ..aka attachment (samsaric human rebirth)
Pad= perserverance which purifies ignorance and prejudice (samsaric animal realm rebirth)
Me= perfection in the practice of concentration which purifies possessiveness and greed (samsaric hungry ghost realm rebirth)
Hung= wisdom which purifies hatred and aggression (samsaric hell rebirth)

It is the buddhist mantra of chenrezig

I know I'm coming in a little late here, but I freakin' LOVE the ink, hun!

Looks great with your skin tone, and kudos to the artist. The color looks really clean and even.

I've been working on a few original pieces, of late, but I'm still deciding if I'm going to do it again. The placement would be key since I work with children, and live in a small town. People get all bent out of shape about stuff like that, and I don't want to put it in a place I'm going to regret.

We'll see.

I'm psyched for you. It looks great!

I have no regrets at all

I love my rib piece

I had to be very careful about where I put mine too. It could never been seen at work even at cocktail parties in dresses and such.

I was limited and therefore went with the ribs even though I was told it was going to be one of the worst places (of not the worst place) as far as pain was concerned

two tylox took care of that though

No pain at all...until the next morning :p
