How much would gas have to cost before you quit driving????

I voted never only because the question is 'quit' driving. I would probably always drive, but pick myself up like a honda civic and drive only to places I really had to go to.

Reason being here (virginia) there is no public transportation. or there is, but its really, really sad. Other than that it would be about a 12 mile bike ride (or walk) for me to get to work, and then another 12 back... and thats close for a job around here, really close

im required to drive to work unless i want to bike over 150 miles a day, in a business suit and heels carrying about 500 lbs of paperwork on my back.

So I guess I have to keep driving even if its $50 a gallon

Luckily I get a mileage reimbursement but that used to cover wear and tear, oil changes, gas and some of the car payment

now it is barely covering my fuel costs

I put never also. The reason I think is that it would be completely impossible to just stop driving altogether. My drive to work is about 17 miles. If it got bad enough, I guess I would have to start riding my bicycle a couple of times a week or something. On top of that, we (my wife and I) will have to start consolidating errands and all that shit to save fuel.

never.

1) I drive for a living.
2) P-cola is like VA...everything is spread out unlike the tightly packed metropolises, and the public transpo sucks.

However, I did start riding a bicycle to work again.

sounds like the prices are pretty close then papa

they are about roughly 4 dollars a gallon over here (depending on what grade of gas you use) and steadily on the rise...

If you take the suck ass state of the dollar right now... gas would cost us almost 10 bucks a gallon in most of Europe.

Its insane but I think at 7$ a gallon. I think I might have to explore other options like Commuter transpo. or Metro. I cant stand gas esp. paying for premium.

I'm working as a union carpenter, so my job entails driving to a job site. I also drive a small car. Going up a steep climb for 70 miles averages me about 2 gallons. A hour of driving is about 1.5-2 gallons. Luckily in Phoenix when you go north you go uphill, but when you go back south you end up coming downhill. So you can ride the brakes for 30 miles...

But the union contract is $23.00 a hour right now with full medical/dental/optical covered by the company you work for. Which are pretty cheap wages - but the "gas reinburstment" only takes effect when driving atleast 70 miles to a job site from the union hall. Which means I can spend 19 dollars on gas in a day and they won't pay me squat, but I can pay 20 and because of the insignificant extra mileage I get a reinburstment.

Long story short. Work in general is getting farther away, and the costs of driving are getting worse. "Union strong" is becoming "god I hope we get a extra 20 cents a hour and don't get laid off". And everyone seems to be hurting. Except the guys who stole 300+ gallons of diesel the other day from our work, lol. And everyday I meet people who are getting 10$ a hour and are leaving that job for a job thats 12$ a hour and are super happy... stay there for years, get laid off. Then are upset the next job they go to actually wants to cut them in pay. Its like everyone actually has to learn for themselves what working for shit is before they go get a real job. Problem is they're keeping those crap companys going...... In a perfect world I guess companys would actually help their employee's with the cost of gas. But now-adays your lucky if they don't try to cheat you out of hours....

For this I voted 10$ a hour. Because at the moment they have people fighting over the costs of gas here in Phoenix. And I don't even bother going to the cheap gas place because the entire 10 square block population is there bumper to bumper. But at 10$ a hour I'd probably convert my car to a fuel alternative or get myself a motorcycle....

I supposed to put premium in my car but started switching from one tank of premium to one tank of plus on and off when the gas prices got over $2.50 a gallon

Now its all plus gas. So far I have not noticed any problems. No knocking or anything. I might be losing performance but with gas being as high as it is I cant afford to drive like a I stole it anyways.

Its a lease so I dont care if I'm clogging the fuel injectors.

I wont go to regular gas though. I think that is too much of a risk.

Graff, I used to put plus into my cadi every now and again and didnt have any problems but I wouldnt suggest regular.

Sammie, lower grade gas shouldn't clog injectors anymore than super,,,,,,it just has lower octane, which invites detonation, ie knocking. Try a quarter tank of regular next time your about empty and see if your shit knocks......if it does then just go back to the gas station and top up your tank with super.

Is your car super-charged? If not you MIGHT be able to get away with it.. I guess depending on the compression.. if it's like 14:1.. maybe you can use an octane booster...

Laroacha

I've read somewhere that octane boosters are really just a waste of money. They don't add enough of whatever they're made of to really affect the octane rating, otherwise everyone who owned high performance engines with high compression would've quit buying higher octane fuel years ago.

Tuck,

You're going to stop when its $5? ... I bet it is already that much somewhere up in the DC area
