The 4G Race (http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/mowi/article.php/3754526/Whos+Ahead+in+the+4G+Race?.htm) is in full swing and businesses are divided on whether to lend their support to WiMax or to LTE. Nortel is using a new approach that points to general trends in the emerging 4G market. Originally a strong supporter of WiMax technology, Nortel recently (http://www.networkworld.com/news/2008/061308-nortel.html) chose to scale back some of its WiMax commitment in favor of an investment in LTE. This strategy (http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/marketwire/0405771.htm) allows the company to get in on the WiMax market which is developing more rapidly and at a lower cost than LTE technology. It also allows Nortel to make longer-term plans for LTE development, an area which is growing in interest faster than originally predicted and which could prove to be more profitable in the long run. Although most companies continue to back one or the other, there are signs that others (like Motorola) intend to adopt Nortel s approach to betting on both LTE and WiMax.
