A video game publishing company called Trion World Network is working on ways (http://www.siliconvalley.com/news/ci_9664565) to harness the power of broadband in order to change the way that online gaming works and hopefully to launch the next generation in gaming. "Trion's model, which the firm only recently began to explain in detail, is to create online games whose key content doesn't depend on the computing power of players' consoles and PCs. Players will use those machines to get online, but Trion's technology and servers will deliver the core experience."
There are several benefits to this new approach but the most interesting one could be the fact that this allows for the games to be constantly updated based on user feedback. Essentially, the game itself will be a large database that can be altered on a daily basis as the data is analyzed; an area of the game that is regularly ignored by players can be altered to make it more interesting.
This approach additionally allows for more multi-media interaction. For example, Trion has plans to join with the SciFi channel to create a game that develops and evolves in conjunction with a TV show. There aren t firm release dates for the first game yet but rumors suggest it ll be approximately another year before this level of gaming starts to take off.
